hey guys...I'm trying to ID my motor in my '65 Ford F100 without pulling apart in this damn snow...just getting me closer to what I have will help!

Outside appearances: it's a 2-bbl, stock iron intake, SBF. truck originally came with a 352.

...but you pop a valve cover, and an interesting surprise greets you!

...aluminum 1.6:1 roller rockers and Ford Racing pushrod guideplates!

the castings under the valve cover are as follows:

302 with one dot over it
    a large B
    1H27

the block also has "1H31" cast into the date bad below the distributor.

Further dis***embling isn't in the question right now, since there's about 2 feet of snow surrounding the truck. :D

I'm pretty sure the year on the date stamping must be 1971, 81, or 91...since the 302 wasn't around in '61, and I doubt people would go through the trouble of hot-rodding a 221 or 260. But people DO surprise me on a regular basis doing wierd things... why would they put roller rockers and pushrod guideplates on the heads and then keep the stock iron intake and 2-bbl?

are there any other external cues i could look for to help my identification? I can't get block or head casting numbers without further dis***embling...:(

  2. id say the guy you bought it from wanted to keep the alum 4bbl intake and carb for his next project and just put the 2bbl on it to sell i dont understand it not haveing headers with those kind of valve train parts

Looks like a sbf, not 352.I thought i was buying a 289 in a 63 ford. The only way that i know of is with the starter removed up under is a code like c5 1965,what i found d7 1977
That engine has newer rocker arms i think.

look for numbers like C6AP or D0AP or E5TP etc.

The letter is the dcade, number is the year, first example is 1966, second is 1970, third is 1985

Those 1H** numbers are teh casting date, the first letter is the year, letter is the month, next two are the day of month.

Not sure but I think the only code on the motor is near the starter boss location. Intakes and heads etc. could be off anything. Peter

I am fairly sure it's a 1971 engine, the 1981 or 1991 would have the 50oz balance damper whcih does not work with that front dress I can see there. Also look for the clutch z-bar boss on the block, that went away in the early 1980's

yup, the block code is read by pulling the starter, and the head code is accessible by yanking the intake and putting a mirror into the lifter valley and reading the head codes from underneath...neither of which is feasible now.

George/Maine, yep, I noted it's a SBF, most likely a 302. The original 352 was yanked long ago. Where in ME are you? I'm in the SW region of the State.

YESS!!! That's the kind of information I was looking for, thank you Bluebolt! Here is the Z-bar boss; I don't know enough about Fords to tell if this is part of the block, as cast, or if this is a bolt-on adapter. What do you think?

There should be an external number under the ledge on the right rear cylinder bank. I can decode your block if you post those numbers. I also have the head code numbers handy.
