    HELP!

I took apart my mechanical fan after it seized and got a new bearing, but one of the 8 housing bolts was broken. The bad news? No one has this size bolt!

Any ideas where I can find 8 12/32 bolts so I can put my fan back together?

Thanks for the speedy reply, Tinman!

I've tried several Ace Hardware without luck. Also tried a few industrial hardware places and a specialty auto fastener warehouse. I'm told it's an old, obsolete size. In fact, one guy just chuckled and said "Good luck."

I'm running an electric fan right now, but I'd love to get the mechanical one going again.

    Thanks again for your help!

    Size 12, pitch 32.

I needed some for the hinge of my windshield and happened to find them at Home Depot. After I was in there looking for like an hour...

Never heard of 12-32, they make a 12-24 which is scarce but is out there.

    Smart ***! :)

I went in not knowing the size, and after not finding anything right, was told it was a 12/32 bolt. Yeah... it reduces to 3/8... but 12/32 is what everyone has been calling it.

A quick google search turns them up, looks like a lot of that size are specific to firearms and gunsmithing... it is UNEF, I am ***uming that means 'extra fine' thread?

Make sure it's 32 before you go there.
Because I only seen 12-24 in there. No 12-32.

not trying to be a smart***,I'm not smart enough..I've used little 8-32 screws on stuff, but saw your post written as a fractional size,12/32,and thought maybe you had measured it,and the guys in the stores were screwing with you cause they didn't know how to help you

HD should have a pitch gauge hanging on the rack with nuts and bolts. Confirm that 12-32 is what you really need. Good luck.

Just havin' fun with ya! I'm bolt ignorant, and am getting quite an education with all of this. I reckon writing it with the / was maybe wrong? This bolt seems to stump everyone wherever I take it. They use the measure chart, but since it doesn't quite fit, most have surmised the 12-32.

#12 threads can be 24 UNC, 28 UNF, and 32 UNEF. Good luck finding one, though. Back when I was working in the aerospace industry #12 screws were commonly used for aircraft.

Try McMaster-Carr if you can't get them otherwise. They have plenty off odd fasteners. www.mcmastercarr.com Fast too.

  21. Are you sure it is not 12-24 thread? I know that Ford did use 12-24, never heard them using 12-32.

You might want to look at a metric size. 5mm X .8mm (diameter X thread pitch) would be very close.

    Good Luck

Lay it down on an inch rule and count up the # of threads in exactly one inch...should get you much better idea without the 'surmising'...

I'm ***uming that all the parts are original, and you're not looking at an offshore repop or repurposed fan from something metric, correct?

  25. Not an onsolete size. The Ace here in Raytown has them or can get them.

12/24 would be more common 12/32 would be considered superfine as opposed to fine.

When a parts guy looks at you and laughs its kind of like the town drunk looks at you and laughs, it just means he doesn't have a whole lot upstairs.

No looking at where he is from, the big box stores have probably driven out the small stores. That has happen in our area in the last 26 years, and around here the big box store employees are bright as bricks. I drive 16 miles north of here and they still have real hardware stores where even the younger employees seem to be knowledgeable.

A quick search shows they exist for sure. In fact, according to the chart in the link, the #12 size comes in thread pitches of:

    12-24
    12-28
    12-32
    12-36
    12-40
    12-48
    12-56

Not sure how easy it will be to find them though.

If you have room, why not tap them out to 1/4-20 or 1/4 -28? Then you'll never have problems finding one again......1/4-20 has to be about the most commonly used bolt size out there...
