Thanks Kevin. After a lot of additional research (that I never updated on the thread about the trailer) I found that it is indeed a lineman's trailer. With the US Patent Office listing that someone so kindly linked, as well as the Model T wheels, and talking to a few really old phone guys (I'm a phone guy too) we've nailed it down.

In the 20's and 30's phone men were still on horseback. Splicing materials were extremely heavy (lead splice cases, lead sealers, etc.) and were loaded into these trailers. A "supervisor" would take the loaded trailer to the splice location behind his Model T pickup, then chain and lock it to the pole.

The splicer would come in on horseback (or walk), perform the work (often over several days), lock the trailer up and leave. The supervisor would return for the trailer after a few days.

There are remnants that pin-point it as a telephone company equipment. On the side doors there is faded paint in a circular shape with holes for mounting. I have a couple of old "Bell Company" signs that fit this perfectly. They're tin, not long after they stopped production of the original porcelain signs... if you can imagine that! Porcelain signs must have been lots of fun for target practice!

Didn't mean to rob this thread, sorry for going off on a tangent here. :)

  4. 1978 Burrow, '60 dodge taillights, '63 Corvair wires, custom denim cushions, I made the mexican blanket curtains and replaced all the particle board cabinet doors and table with solid wood.

I also have a 60's Sears utility trailer with the steel cover (off here)... The tongue is so short, it's impossible to back up.

since everyone's posting any/all oddball trailers...
Here's my nineteen dickity-two International bed trailer that someone left tarped and full at the dump.
i went for the tarp and ended up bringing the whole thing home. Gave it a 5 inch lift, and the worn 32's off my dailydriver.-

Why did I immediately picture that thing rolling down a hill unattached from the rod, bouncing back and forth then rolling end over end and coming out almost unscathed???

Hey Sheep, is that just a sheet metal box? Looks bitchin' and reasonably simple to build!

Not sure it qualifies as cool/unique, but it is a 1946 Murcell Inc trailer. My dad bought it when I was a kid, he gave it to me a number of years back.

It tows really well, will haul an amazing amount of weight, and has a very cool shape to the fenders.

This is the coolest, I seen this when I was a kid and it didn`t really sink in as to what it was. Then as I got older thinking back about the odd trailer because I know now its made from two 55 chevys but its long gone. Fast forward 20 or so years I`m telling a friend about it and he then tells me its at his dads house. A old friend of his dads had it built early 60s to go hunting and fishing in canada. His dad got it when the guy passed away.
Its now stored in my barn, soon I`ll be pulling it behind my 63 fairlane wagon, How cool is that!:D

A little project that my dad and I worked on when I was a teenager. It's stuff like this that got me into design, metal shaping, body work, and paint..

I recall he did one side then had me duplicate it on the other... only in reverse out of 16GA sheet metal. After using it for a while, a guy who actually owned a Ford Ranger pickup approached us to buy it...it was tough to let go.

Mine isn't pretty like the others shown and the guys at work told me it looks like a dock with wheels, but I've had this one for over 30 years and have moved a bunch of stuff on it.......even a Fox Mustang body I hauled to the scrap yard one time. :D
