Ive tried a search and really didnt seem to answer any of my questions. Im building a full fendered 34 Ford pickup and I am not sure as to what steering box to go with. I am going to use a frame that a fellow hamber is building at the moment. It will definitely have a drop axle and a flathead. What steering box do I need to be looking for? Ive seen examples of the vega, F1, corvair,or even a 34 box, What do you gents recommend? Pictures, measurments, and do's and don'ts would be greatly appreciated.
Vega's probably the most popular street rod setup. Plenty around although some of the new repo stuff is junk. Easy to install and gives you a lot of room to work with. F1 is probably the best for traditional setup. Very durable and works fine. But space may be a bit tight depending on engine choice and installation is a bit more complicated.
My 34 has an F-1 box. Vegas with all their U joints look too streetroddy for my tastes now. I was building a 32 with a Vega but I never was satisfied with the look.
What engine/trans header or exh. manifold combo will be used? That has a lot to do with steering box choice. when you set it up try to do the steering and motor mounts at the same time. My '32 truck has a Buick nailhead with stock exh. manifolds so the vega box worked best (still tight)...
Hey tommy, With using the F-1 box, is this a case where you had to reverse the box? Were you or did you use the F-1 column? Do you have any pics? Pardon the ignorance. Im still trying to figure out the "interchangeable" hot rod parts and the tweeks you do to make them work.
