Hot Rods Hey Texans!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by daveydeuce, Jan 18, 2011.

  1. Looking at a possible move to the San Antonio/Austin area. Looking for input as to lic/reg fees for Classic cars, ie Deuces, 34s, 40 Fords, 50 Merc and so on. You know, HOT RODS!! Is it an assessed value, flat tax, by year, etc? Who determines the tax value? Are state inspections required, how often, etc?
Have read the Texas websites and kinda have an idea but want input from the folks that are faced with it daily. Where the rubber meets the road. Thanx in advance Dave

i see there are not bites so ill try

Dave i just titled my 41 ford pu as a classic here in austin. registration with my year of maunufacture plate for 1 year is $72.00. i am required to get a safety inspection only. not all the BS emissions stuff. it is $12.75

oh forgot i transfered the title to my name about 3 months ago with no registration at a buying price of $ 900.oo (wink wink) and payed i think 6.25 % tax on it. classic does not come under to presumtive value for taxes.

hope it helps. pm me if you need more details

If you register it as an antique you pay $55 for 5 years. No inspection ever. You can actually get the insurance waived as well but these days i would not take the chance. The only thing is....you can only drive the vehicle on the weekends, to the mechanic or to places of public interest...car shows and stuff like that. I never got pulled over and drove mine as a daily for 4 years. If its over a certain amount of years then you can put whatever you want as the purchase price on the 130-U form. 6 1/2 percent tax.

registrar it as a antique and its a like 100 or so for five years. only bad thing is you get kinda of an ugly L-plate but no inspection or anything. but i think you are limited how much you can drive it. ( they say like only to and from shops and parades) but cops atleast here in houston will only pull you over to see you car. unless you are doing something outrageous.

you can also registrar as a classic and five year fee. but you have to pass inspection every year and you car has to have whatever it had from factory lights blinkers brakes etc. but no limit on driving. also a plate that says classic.
