Alright boys~ I am running a SBC with stainless headers and I decided to use 2 chamber flow masters for my exhaust, I have caught alot of heat from the "traditional" police so I wonder...... How many of you run straight pipes, smitty's or mufflers in your SBC'ies?????

    Cheers,

i run straight fenderwell headers, but i have a pretty well built motor as well.

Porter mufflers are the way to go for that tradtionalawesomeinyourfacekickyouinthenuts sound

I run straight pipes on my '54 Ford, but in the middle of the exhaust run I put a 3" pipe 2 feet long making a echo chamber sounds real deep and no poping at backing off the gas, same thing on my wifes '41 International pick up. All exhaust pipes are 2'' full run.

Magna flow, 2 1/2" pipe all the way back. I have a big car though, Impala.

  6. Your aleady on track. If the car is gonna be driven alot save your sanity and put the mild mufflers on it.

Loud exhaust is cool at a show or whatever but it gets old quick on the street in daily traffic..

I haven't ran mine yet but I'm planning on the original '56 exhaust manifolds to 1.75" pipes and through a pair of Smithy mufflers out to the back.

At almost 54 I've lost about 70% of my hearing. What the world don't need is a another LOUD slow car.

Started with 2" Smittys on my 49 - really obnoxious rap - hard to live with on the road.I think part of the problem is very restictive tailpipe over the axle and around the airbags. Now have cheap "Turbo Mufflers" - sounds OK but too quiet !! I know - never satisfied........

My 47 has 2" pipes and cheap, no-name gl***pacs and it sounds great - but tailpipe goes straight UNDER the axle. (Both cars are seriously low...) Probably going to put the 49 tailpipe under the axle and go back to Smittys.

I'm running fenderwell headers into gl***packs, ending at the rear axle.

  14. I've ALWAYS had gl*** packs (even in the 80's on my 70's car), next one is going to get porters.

I run super turbos with an h pipe. Sounds good at idle and pretty quiet driving.

IMHO loud pipes are great for about 30 seconds. After that, I just want to get away from the sound.

When I was a teen, I dug loud cars. Dumb me. I have tinnitus, and I'd bet one or two other guys around here do too. You do *not* want to fool with it.

    just my 2 cents

If I could get it quieter fairly cheaply, I would.

Open pipes are neat until you spend the rest of your life saying WHAT to people. Go for a nice mellow tone and enjoy.

    HUH?
pretty much blew out my hearing during my mis-spent youth...hot rods, drags, 2 cycle dirt bikes, and a career in construction...can't hear for **** and hearing aids only help some...non the less, 2 1/4" pipes with a pair of flowmasters sounds real good!

Besides, what's the worst that can happen when you can't hear "she who must be obeyed?

While they are far from traditional, to me Flowmasters don't sound bad at all if they are muffling a lot of cam & compression. Its when you hear them on your typical bone stock street car is when it sounds like an annoying, echoing, drone mobile.

Smitty's here. I like the sound of them, especially backing off down a long hill. Music.

I'm running headers with dual pipes and gl***packs on my '56 with a 283. It sounds awesome, I get a lot of compliments on it. People are surprised to find out its only a 283.

Its actually not too bad at cruising speed or idle...but punch it and the world knows!

I love my SBC with 2-1/4" pipes, 2-chamber Flowmasters and H-pipe. The H-pipe really made them sound a lot better!

Just putting my exhaust together, using 2 1/2" Rams Horns, with 2 1/2" pipe most of the way into a pair of Smithy's. Then short 3" pipes to get a more mellow tone....
This is on an "X" frame Chevy, and will exit just in front of the rear wheel.
    Anyone done similiar ??

  30. Sam,
Flowmasters are no doubt considered a little street roddish. But who really cares. I'd run 'em if I had em.

I normally run gl*** packs. Its just my style, I think. Well that and I'm a cheap *******.

I'm as deep into traditional as anybody but when it comes to what kind of mufflers you can run unless you are building a museum piece I just don't see the point. Tell em to take a flyin' screw at the moon and charge it to the '******.
