does anyone know where to find the strips of mastic, that used to be used to seal light housings etc? the nasty tarry looking stuff that never completely sets? I've looked everywhere, online included, and it seems to have just disappeared, you used to be able to roll this stuff into a strip, force it into a crack where a light lens would sit, then the lens was pressed into it, it sealed out water, and also held the parts together
I've used a 3m product called strip caulk that I got from either Carquest or NAPA. It's black and comes in long thin strips. It performs very much like your description. Hope this helps. Greg.
Go to an RV parts store. They have rolls of a mastic for around $10. Used to seal vents and such. Works great ....
Would Lok***e Red or Blue work for you? I use Lok***e Blue on the plastic tensoin adjusters on my welding helmet. It keeps the thumbscrew set in place which keeps the helmets flip/tension set so my helmet isn't always falling down. I also know exactly how much of a "flip" I need to perform to get the helmet in front of my eyeballs. (I like an accurate flip action and need my helmet to flip down the same 100 times a day). Loc***e blue works well for this and lasts about 6 months to a year at which point I re-apply. Loc***e red would really bond things together and would probably be more appropriate for a red lens. (Additionally, I also use blue Lok***e on the Thumbscrews on Visegrips especially when I need them to apply the exact same clamping force over and over again). just a thought. moe .
any auto body supply which would include any Napa stores that have that dept. If you strike out locally there's always Eastwood too.
the stuff you want isnt the stuff from the rv places that is the saem thing you are looking for but its junk there is better stuff called butol tape ..i call it dumb dumb its black looks like winsheld seal it comes on a roll and you can pull it off and use as much as you need for what ever its made by 3m products and works pretty good go to a autobody supply place they have it good luck
Duct seal, get it in 1lb blocks in the electrical section of a hardware store. Another described it but couldn't remember the name.
On the job we used call it dumdum! Always have some in the garage. Seals almost anything as long as heat it not present!
I like the 3-M Strip Caulk alot. You can use it like it comes in the box, in long strips or roll up a ball of it and form a strip any thickness that you need.
