Seems pretty stupid and waste of otherwise decent racing machinery not to mention unnecessary safety risks. Sorry, just don't see the entertainment factor. But, if others do and there's still people willing to do it, fine with me.
It does seem pretty stupid. I could barely afford to drive on a track where everyone was supposed to go the same direction.
While at the NSRA Nats in Louisville, we ventured across the river into Indiana and stumbled upon a local dirt track. Rolled in and asked what was racing that night, and in his best Hillbilly drawl, the 300lb Bubba proudly proclaimed "Championship Figger ates". We headed to Hooters .....
They run them up here at Holland Speedway a few times a summer too, even with busses ! It's during the crash o rama event, good times with enough beverages in you.
They run at the local fairs around here. Usually front drive **** in like 8" of mud to keep speeds down. And they wear football helmets.
indy speeddrome has a large race with big money the cars are a cross of openwheel modifides and late model cars. rack and pinion quick changes and fast 4 barrel open engines. these cars also race in calif Jessey James did a eppisode on 8 racing on his TV show.also I know in ky,ohio fla and alabama .A driver will get more experence in one figure 8 season as running 4 years on a oval. One of the few places where a good driver can make up for sub standard equipment. I love it. I have owned cars others have driven and also drove quite a few myself. Also have seen 2 die in crashes in the intersection. But also have seen 3 others die in reg circle races and 1 die at a drag strip.
Run 4 races a year plus a endurance race all summer long. We even have a few "open cl*** cars" running 700-800hp alky motors. check youtube for races at Rockwellcity, IA.
I used to watch them run at the Davenport, Iowa track back in the 60`s. pretty sure its long gone by now.
Oh cmon people!! figure 8's are fun! I would figure its like a demolision derby.. I wouldn't put too much into my car if it was that kind of race car... but then again some people put a year's worth of building into a derby car... same thing I guess..
I'm kinda surprised to see the hate for figure 8, I'd have thought people would get it. I've seen them at irwindale. Those are racecars, not junkers, and it's some of the most exciting racing I've ever seen. Hats off to those guys. I've been hit head on before and it put the fear in me, I couldn't do it.
