I'm wanting my 28 Sedan to look like a hot rod of the late 50s, here's a list of the parts I have so far and the plans for it hoping everyone can give me some advice to keep me on the right right track with my build

I start with the front suspension...I have a dropped A axle, split 40s bones, 37-41 round back spindles, and 53-56 hubs and brakes
out back I'll be running a Ford 9", ladder bars and buggy spring...I know the late model 9" I'm running isn't period but I need a stout rear end
16" steel wheels front and back with black wall tires
the power plant of the car is a 390 Fe..I already have a set of cal custom valve covers for it and looking to get a 3x2 intake for it..right now its coupled to a c6 but I'm hoping to find a 4sp to put behind it

now on to the other part of my questions would chrome suspension be to early for a late 50s hot rod? Or would a mix of painted and chromed parts be more period correct? I've looked at the 50s period thread and others trying to find my answers but I can't come to a conclusive answer Thanks for any and all help

    Thanks, Stanley aka Stan Lee

  2. Can finned aluminum Lincoln valve covers be found for that FE engine?
Banjo 40 steering wheel would be fitting, with an original related column.

    pic of Lincoln valve covers?

  4. #1, don't know if the FE engine style was available with the v-c's Lincoln used on some engines. On the center bolt valve cover engines Lincoln had, they are sexy. They have the Lincoln insignia cast into them with the fins.
#2, wish I had a pic of what I'm talking about. Sorry.

I'll see if i can google them thanks for the suggestions Im shooting for it to look like a 50s rod been upgraded thru the yrs

  6. Been looking up 368 to find picture, because the v-c's I saw are from that size engine. Trouble is, Lincoln Y-block. I don't think they will be big enough to even be adapted. From what I understand, hard to find.
After shooting post I started thinkin',, by the time they started using an FE in a Lincoln, pretty cast valve covers were history. MY MISLEAD.

Don't go there. I saw a lot of 50's hot rods that had been "upgraded" in the 70's with crushed velvet upholstery, psychedelic paint, and 8 track stereos. You want a 50's car, build one, but skip any subsequent "upgrades".

no I'm not meaning upgraded like that... say a young man built a car in 1950 and thru the passing yrs he upgrades his car like switching over from early style juice brakes to f100 brakes goin from a ol tired flat head to that new Fe thats what im meaning upgrading...everything you listed makes me want to puke lol

    from hi desert

I'm also building a 28 sedan in late 50's early 60's style..I'm going to run a 61 pontiac with a 6 deuce cross ram intake, a 61 limited slip rear..for now I'll run whites w`/ 16's big & little's, but eventually chrome reverse in the rear and maybe some chromies in the front...It's been fun so far....I've seen finned valve covers for FE blocks, but their too common, also have seen dual quad intakes, not sure on the 3 deuces but i'm sure their out there...

hey man....i love the period upgrade train of thought....my 28 coupe is going in a similar direction....late 50's style mainly but evolved with a more 60's style interior and a few other bits.....this was the reality for most cars....us car guys are the same now as they were back then.....most of us just cant leave shit alone when its done, theres always something to change or improve....or ruin.

I know that's what id be doing if I was a young guy back in the 50s everything a new improvement could be made to the car i would wither it be speed wise or style wise but I don't want mine to dip to far into the 60s style show rods

You should run one of those late 40's-early 50's 'Merc/F1/probably in other stuff' rear ends........ The 9-inch looks like hell....

Well with my car sitting as low as it does you really wont see the rear end...plus I'd rather trust something I know will handle the power from my motor I plan on driving it and driving it hard so I don't need the rear end to be a weak link
