Well, I don't suppose it matters at all - that's exactly why I said - I just want to know. I'm just one of those people. And SOMEONE out there must know.
As for an update....I did find out enough little details to check from talking to people to determine that is about 85% 29 - so that's what I went with. Had my neighbor the motor officer use the engine number (which is a 30) and write me up a VIN verification. Week and a half later I was done, ***le, plates, the whole deal.
    Thanks everyone for the input!

the early 28 cabs had the rear window higher in the center panel.

  5. Don't let the DMV charge you weight fees for a pickup, which is considered a commercial vehicle under CVC 9400. California Vehicle Code section 9401 (a) says "Motor vehicles manufactured in or prior to 1936, are exempted from the payment of the weight fees provided for in Section 9400." My 1929 Ford open pickup is registered not as a roadster, and not as a pickup, but as Body Type Model "VA", or "other". No weight fees apply and automobile plates are issued. An owner can pay weight fees and request current commercial plates for a pre-1937 vehicle under CVC 9401 (b).
But, knowing DMV, if you don't pay weight fees, then you might have a problem registering it with commercial year of manufacture plates. Maybe somebody else has been through that and could provide their story.

Wow, I'd never heard that, good to know.... I've already done it now and had to get it weighed and all that - just to find out that it weighs less than the payload of a "real" commercial vehicle! Seemed silly to me to have to register something this small and light and old as a commercial vehicle. I knew there must be a way around it, but I obviously didn't do enough digging on the topic.
What does the "VA" stand for?
Yeah, I am intending to run some Y.O.M. plates eventually.....

everyone says its a 28 or 29 but they did use the same body till mid 30,most early 30s p.u. i have seen have the threaded gas cap...its old enough that with some parts changed it would be very hard to say.The frame and or motor might not be the one it was born with..doesnt really matter that much...Have Fun
