i think its cool as hell to hop up what came in your car from the factory. Be it a 6 or 8. some mills are just plain cool to run in anything. what do you fellas think? let me hear it. do you keep the soul of that ride or just do what?

  2. If you're lucky enough to get a car with an engine thats worth you time it's cool but some motors can be a complete waste of time, i love the sixes but the 216 is a complete waste of time! 235s are another story though....

  8. I hear GMC 302 sixes w/ a Wayne 12 port head and injection are kind of cool.

I'm from the ol' school ,,,,, if your gonna have a hot rod ya gotta have the engine to make it a hot rod!,,,,,,,there is no substute for cubic inches,,,,

I have swapped out several inline 6's for V8's in the last 40 years,,,,my first 54 ford that spun a main bearing was swapped for a 390,,,,a 65 ford truck got a 289,,,the 6 cylinder Chevelle from Hell got a 327 and the current 54 wagon project is gettin' a 302/5-speed combo.

,,,,and are Inline 6's traditional?,,,,,sure they are!

I grew up in the 50's/60's and all guys had on their mind was a V8 powered hot rod,,( well, they wanted something else but this is about cars) :D ,,,

Traditionally, we ran 6s because we couldn't afford a V8 yet.

Two of my teenage sons have straight 6 vehicles, they can do a V8 swap when they have the $$$, if they want to. I'd rather see them learn on the low perf engines though. Maybe because that's what I had to do when I was young!

I'm running a 235 with the usual hop up stuff. I love my 6 but I'm still lookin' forward to putting a 8 in it.

  13. I think 6's can be cool, especially when there realy done up with rare speed equipment, but I'm sticking with V8's for traditional rods-either Flatheads or early OHV's.

  14. I'm gonna hide in the corner - my two cars together add up to 7 cylinders.
    A five and a two.

Maybe I've matured beyond cubic inches.

Maybe I'm still broke trying to pay off lawyers from my divorce (still not completely settled).

    More likely I'm just weird.

Do the six, but do a good 'un.

I kept the six in my '50 plymouth because after putting a 350 in my '53 chevy truck I felt like it had lost all of it's character. I didn't want to lose the essence of the plymouth with a boring sbc. Sure it won't have the neck-snapping acceleration, but that isn't what the car is about.

That, and I've had a ball building the six because it isn't something you see everyday, I'm getting e-mail from around the globe from guys who like it, and it sounds really cool...

man that's a good question. in my ranchwagon i had a 223 straight six. fun little motor it was bulletproof...well almost. the only bummer was when it came to finding replacement parts forget about it! i had to scavenge the yards to find em' but i guess that's half the fun!

You ask me, I say an eight.
    Ask *****6, he'll tell you a six.
Either can be good or bad engines.
All it really depends on is what YOU like!

  18. My '59 originally had a 223ci. Great motor but it would have cost the same as a V8 to re-build.

I am in the process of rebuilding/fabbing intake and exhaust for my forld flat 6 (226).

  20. It all comes down to what type of ride you're building: daily driver, hot rod, kustom, etc.
I chose the six because I love the sp**** look in the engine bayand cheap, abundant parts. I can hop it up a little and have a great ride that gets good milage and works perfect and reliable everyday. I'm very satisfied. Plus only one head, more bearings per crank than any 8. It's a work horse and you can drive it hard and put it away wet.
For hp though, you gotta go 8. A bad*** turbo six still isn't an 8. If I really want to go fast, it's two wheels or nothing. Cars claim "no replacement for displacement" but with cycles, it's the almight "power-to-weight ratio" that rules and cars (cages) can't compete.

i dig the **** out of inline sixes and i don't think anyone should apologize for runnin one. my 47 Chevy coupe has a 235 in it. but it smokes like a future lung cancer patient. i just bought a dual carb intake and it already has split exhaust. nothin beats the sound of a Chevy six with splits and dual gl*** packs. it sounds like nothin else.

that said. i'm thinking about putting a SBC i have in the 47. after driving Hotroddrummer's dad's 52 Ford truck with a slightly warmed SBC and an overdrive trans, i realy want something that i can spin the tires in once in a while, or take off from a light and NOT get p***ed by the junker in the next lane. i know i could build the six and get some good power but the 47 is not my main project and i don't want to sink that kind of money into the six when i have a V8 already that is cheaper and more powerful. i just want to have something cool to drive while i build my model A. i'm sick of not having a car and always working on everyone elses. anyway, the six smokes bad so i was gonna just drop in another runing 235 and call it good. that was till i drove that old Chevy powered Ford. all i gotta do to the SBC is bolt it all together, make some motor mounts and hook it all up. i also have a 700R4 trans in the garage and since the stock 3 speed in the Chev is a hunk of **** it'd be a natural to put that in aswell. but then i have to change the rearend too. ok i think an S10 unit will fit. ****! but then the stock 6 lug wheels won't fit. oh well, i can redrill the axles and drums. problem solved. sure is alot of work when you lay it all out like that. i REALY want something with some BALLS though, but maybe i will just drop another 235 in there for the time being. i mean, i did just buy that 2 carb intake so it'll certainly look cool and it should GO pretty decent.

i used to think; "SBC. how boring." but it realy is only boring to look at and talk about. it is alot of fun to drive though and you can't beat the reliability with a stick. i guess it just depends on what you want to do with the car. do you want to look at it and talk about it or do you want to DRIVE it??? not that you could'nt drive it with any other motor, i'm just sayin.

i actually planned to run a 4 duece intake on the SBC if i put it in the 47. i guess i'm still up in the air about which way i'm gonna go. maybe for this summer i will run the 6 and then take my time putting the 350 together and get all the pieces i need around so that next winter i can swap it all out in as little time as possible.

i guess i was realy no help at all, was i???
