just got my qc in the mail a few days ago now the process of assembling it... what are some tips and tricks to make this go a little easier ..oh its for a v8 rear end and is from hot rod works dont kno if there is differences in the companies thanks flop
Check and double check how the ring and pinion mesh. You might need to add another gasket to shim them out. You might not. Try it both ways and see which is more perfect If your car is together, jack the car up as high as you can, slide the entire torque tube and rear with spring under the car with the floor jack, hook up to the tranny, then hang the back. Make sure your spring center bolt seats and the rear is centered, and don't final tighten anything until the car is on the ground and level.
its an open driveline conversion on the qc.... i have it centered quite nicely right now but it has to come out again for assembly(had the case in just to see how it looked ) haha.... i also heard u have to heat the case to get bearings in???? and i also heard i have to get the pinion machined? anyone know anything about this? thanks flop
We do a bit of QC work in the shop. Use BLACK Permatex (I forget the #, 1 or 2) on all bolts. Apply liberaly to the threads. The Racers use the fancy lube, not factory type 80-90, we keep a 5 gal can of Redline or similar lube, purchase it in bulk, its a quickie, you WILL play with gear changes and need it!
[ i kno i can hardly wait to play with gears haha anyone kno about heating the case or machining the pinion?
Years ago there was an article on upgrading (bulletproofing) a Halibrand, that had some HD Max bearing numbers and also involved using three Muncie trans bearings in place of the two Ford tapered bearings and race to support the pinion. If I remember, the pinion's shaft OD had to be ground to fit. If the Ford bearing/race setup is used, the pinion remains stock. Set the gear pattern, same as Ford, with the side gasket combination. The pinion is located with shims, same as Ford. Yes, the case should be warmed to press in the Ford pinion support race. Use either a GENTLE rosebud tip flame or pop it in the oven to 250-300* Wear mitts (duh!) I did it on mine, but that was a decade+ ago. Oldtimer's disease has kicked in, If I can dredge up my notes and/or the article, I'll post it. What does Hot Rod Works say? Is theirs the same as a Halibrand internally?
I believe the HRW V8 QC is made by Winters and is the same one Dick Sparado sells. At least they look identical. If I remember correctly, you're supposed to heat the case before installing the bearing races.
Go to my recent post about Q/Cs. It has the Winters web site address. It'll probably tell ya' what ya' need to know. I've never messed with those little Q/Cs. I've always run the 3/4 ton style. We used to heat the cases up with a torch to get the bearing in and out. Winters now recommends heating the entire center section and side bells in an oven. Do it when the old lady is out shopping and beg for forgiveness after!!! Rear end lube smells especially good when hot!! But it won't be half as hot as the old lady when she finds out what you've done!!!!!!!!!! AND,yes, the Spadaro Q/C is one made by Winters. Dick and Vaughn Winters teamed up to work on that project. It's a far superior rear to the old V8 Halibrand.
i can only imagine the smell of burning rear end oil thank god there in none in there since the case i brand spankin new so not that much trouble with the old lady just the smell of warm aluminum im most likly gonna try this soon so maybe i will do a little tech post just for kicks thanks for your help in the matter
The Hot Rod Works one is supplied by Rodsville - South 40 Street Rods (not sure who actually manufactures it - could very well be Winters) & is a V8 design. From their website: http://www.south40streetrods.com/RodsvilleV-8Quickchange.html
