"If you could Write the Classified Rules - What Would they be ?"

  1. Some good ideas here, but I think many of them would be impossible to police. The auto expire after 30 days sounds good...don't know if it's possible.
I use the classifieds quite a bit, and they work very well. Thank you Mods for your work.
JMO, but one good way to deter the lurkers and the resellers is to make the ads for Alliance members only...

These are my only ideas on the subject:

I think a person should have no less than 25 posts to prior to selling in the classifieds. Could help keep the spam count down.

Maybe limit title sales...err...historical document sales to a separate sub-forum. I hate wading through that crap. Spam is also a good word for it, but I know some people are looking to frame old papers in their garages...

Could we give the FNG's a break on asking questions in the ads? Most older guys don't know the difference between posting and sending a PM. I think some are lucky in figuring out that reply button.

The rat rod ban in the classifieds needs removed. I know that most of us here cringe at the word, but would you really want to keep someone from posting just because they use the three letter word? I wonder if I've already missed out on a freshly built 331 Cadi, just because a guy saw the rat word warning and decided to take his rat rod motor ad elsewhere. According to a lot a guys here, the difference between the words "rat" and "hot" is grill choice and bad welds/cuts--most of which can be fixed.

Thanks for your hard work around here!

Only thing I would change is the the '3-day bump' rule. I'd be all in favor of a maximum number of times an ad could be brought BTT. If it ain't sold after 3-4 bumps, it's probaby either crap, or it's priced too high. You guys do a good job, and I got no complaints.

I like the old and new so I would allow 70 models and older but I am happy with the rules in place.

  5. How about a "Check this box" that says you agree to the terms before you can proceed placed on the rules page to insure they have at least been seen (knowing that some people still may not read them...)

It could be #5 in the guidelines.

I really like the banned if ya violate the classified rules 3 times thing.. too many newbies with questions yadda yadda yadda in the threads.. can't ya set up the classifieds up so only the thread owner can post?

No such rules. Intro is a good idea, as is a filled our bio...

  10. What's the problem with asking the seller a question on an open forum?

  11. exactly what I was thinking. I posted a question such as this and got a hand slap because I 'failed to read the rules'.

admittedly yes....I failed to read the rules. I honestly fail to read rules a lot of times on the net. Mainly I don't bother because most are common sense type stuff....such as no spamming, no harrassing, no name calling, no attempting to screw people over, etc etc.

I really didn't see the harm in asking a question about the seller's item especially if it may enlighten others about the specifics of the item.

I know I'm one of the newer guys here but, I hate it when I see *must be seen or you got to see this, etc* and no pictures! Email for pictures.....Why should I? pictures should be required for the add. Location is a big one, Why do most of the people have no location for the item for sale? Ebay listings with no prices...And the big one. Rules is rules...they should apply to everyone all the time!
    Ok, I'm done ranting....thanks.:)

I believe it would be better if no reply’s to ads were allowed

Is there any reason for there to be other than to point out a mistake in a description?
Wouldn’t it be so much easier to moderate? …… you would then only have to look down the list of treads / listing and only have to open the ones that have a reply name not matching the posters name.

Would it make it easier for Moderators if no posts were allowed all together ? Yes but thats the way the software program is for now.

Thats what I do now is scan the list and if posters / repliers names don't match, open it up and unless it "says I'll take it" it gets deleted.
I average 25 rule breaker report emails a day.

In a perfect world - If people read the rules and followed them , then we wouldn't be having this discussion.

    Thanks for you suggestions.

After reviewing all these posts, including the ones you guys keep posting, then deleting, I've decided that the classifieds are working pretty damn good and trying to make everyone happy isn't going to work, and it's likely going to have a ripple effect far worse than what we are dealing with.

If you like how it works, use it. If you don't, don't.

We're not changing anything right now.

    I agree - We aren't changing anything.

Concluded that we just aren't going to make everyone happy to the last detail.

    This isn't Ebay - it isn't Craigslists.

The HAMB classifieds is free so just enjoy it as it is or if you don't - then don't use the classifieds.

We do appreciate the feedback and if you see anything out of sorts just report it to a Moderator.

We will delete it as quickly as we can and please remember we donate our time to help make the HAMB what it is.

    Thanks,

    The Moderators
