Get your muliti meter out and check the voltage to the switch and from the switch to the coil.

Is the engine turning over with the starter but just not firing?

    No spark? or no fuel?
Check for power at the coil with the key on. Can always try a jumper wire to the coil.
Use a test light hooked to the positive on the battery and the wire for the points to see if the points are opening and closeing properly. Unhook that wire from the coil when you do that test. Check the coil for output by pulling the coil wire off and using a screwdriver in the wire boot see if spark jumps to ground when the engine is turned over.

    that cracked me up

test lamp or volt meter at coil show full voltage when switch is on?

is the connection at the resistor byb*** lug on the starter clean and solid?

try turning the ignition on with the cap off and points closed,
open the points with a screwdriver a few times till you see a spark
sometimes just doing that will get the juice flowing

If the ballast was bad, it should still start but then die when the key is released.

I've seen a coil get so hot it's bursts when the key is left in the on position without the motor running. Haha

get a pertronix II setup, it has an auto shut off if you leave the key on, and you cant see it under the cap so it looks like a point setup. but if you like to keep it old school, just ignore what i say.

Must have skipped the part where you said you replaced the points.

I have seen points installed incorrectly with the battery + and /or condensor attatched on the wrong side of the insulator bushing on the stud.

This would ground the primary ignition circuit before it gets to your points, causing no spark.

Would only take a minute to double check this..

ok, i tested the coil, switch and distributor and everyting is good. And now it starts. i Fiddled around with it today after replacing the point, condensor and coil and now it works, but it did not yesterday, so i dont know why it wanted to work today but all that matters is that it did. thanks for the help guys.

I know that's what's usually wrong when my car won't start.
