So a buddy of mine who lives a good distance away tells me his Dad left him a motor home thats pretty well trashed. Says it has 424 (yes 424) Hemi in it. Of course it ran when it was parked (in 1985) Motor was supposedly rebuilt before then and had low miles (bla, bla, bla) Should I get it? Is it worth the effort?I"m a Ford guy so its a flipper. Motor home with Hemi-Did somebody actually produce these things? Oldmics
Some had 413's too, but never heard of one with a hemi and definitely never heard of a 424 anything, let alone a hemi. Was this guy or his father a crack head by any chance?
A picture would be very helpful. As a side note...did you happen to purchase an old Stromberg-Carlson Bullet Mic on e*ay last year? 'Cause I sold one to a guy in Baltimore last year when times got tough and I sure do miss it.
whos to say the 426 wasnt sleeved to 424? ha ha !!! how about a 426 wedge i know where a 57 chevy school bus is with a 348 w motor in it...it didnt come that way ...
Probably 454 Chev. put a ton of them in Motorhomes at that time, the 80's. Worked at Chev dealership truck shop back then. I called them murder homes then. Probably blown up. Everyone I seen then was. But I was a heavy line mechanic then is probably why. 70's was the mopar motorhome era wasn't it. Winnebagos had a lot of them then I believe. Never heard of a 426 in one though.
Just about the only Motorhome that possible could have come with a Hemi of any size would have been the old "Cortez". These came with in the begining with a Mopar Industrial 225 Slant Six. They were produced from 1963 until around 1979 or so. I could see one of these having someone install maybe an early Hemi in, MAYBE!! I did a lot of searching and even called a couple of real Hemi guys and if there ever was a 424 inch Hemi it is the mystery motor of all time. It's still worth checking out thats for sure. While I seriously doubt there is or ever was a 424 Hemi, look at the possibilities. It could be a 426 and that would be a real good find any place any time. RS
the travco was a dodge motorhome made in the early 60's, none came with a hemi but going from a 440 to a hemi isn't that far fetched forget the 424 thing and go look at it, a hemi has to be one of the easiest motors of all time to tell from just looking at it
I worked on a 71 winnabago for a customer last spring. It had a 318! Most of them I saw over the years were 440s or 413s.
In the 70s motor homes Mopar powered most of the motorhomes I worked at a Dodge dealer and did all the big truck and motorhome work. The smaller ones had either 318 or 360s in them, but all the larger motorhomes had 440s in them. Chevy did power some motorhomes back then and mostly were 454s.When anybody finds this 424 Hemi posts some pictures cause they will have a one of a kind.
starting to stray off topic but the Cortez 225 slant six had dual side draft carbs and 4 speed trans. I'd love one of those manifolds. My Cortez is a 73 and has the 375 horse 455 Olds front wheel drive
I know it was stated. it was parted in 85, so the next statement does not apply. But I belive the newer SRT8 6.1 motor, with a stroker kit are 424 cubes
