Motion Pictures HD Theater's "AMERICAN ICON - the Hot Rod" TV series

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HEMI32, Oct 27, 2010.

  1. @philly the greek - That's what I was trying to convey in my post ... Bruce Meyers (with an "s") designed the Meyers (with an "s") Manx dune buggy ... and Bruce (@Deuce Bruce) Meyer (without an "s") is the gentleman that appears in every episode of this TV series.

    Seems to be a lot of smack on chip for not being the best speaker to the camera, but I know we all could care less how he reads a cue card or teleprompter. He spent years in the garage, not the anchor desk. This show has been a long time coming.

  3. Episode #11 (entitled "Art with a New Frame") aired tonight.

    This episode was all about the "S-word" ... not the most HAMB friendly show ... but '80s, '90s & present day Street Rods are also a part of Hot Rodding history ... and as such, a story that needed to be included in this TV series.

    The program featured the late Boyd Coddington's contributions to Hot Rodding ... plus short features on John (@lil' john) Buttera, Chip Foose, Steve Moal, & Roy Brizio ... with commentary from the following:

    (in order of appearance)

    * Chip Foose
    * Roy Brizio
    * Tommy Ivo
    * Jo Coddington
    * Steven Young
    * Pete Chapouris
    * Bruce Meyer (@Deuce Bruce)
    * Leslie Kendall
    * Tony Thacker
    * Ken Gross (@Chopperken)
    * Steve Moal

    NOTE: Next week's episode (#12) is entitled "The Next Wave".

  4. Episode #12 (entitled "The Next Wave") aired tonight.

    This episode was all about the passing of the torch and the current state of the hobby ... including nice segments on Hollywood Hot Rods and H&H Flatheads ... a segment about the "R-word" :eek: ... quite a few cameo appearances by HAMBers :cool: ... and commentary from the following:

    (in order of appearance)

    * Chip Foose
    * Alex Xydias
    * Pete Chapouris
    * Ken Gross (@Chopperken)
    * Mike Herman (@Capitan Insano)
    * Troy Ladd (@hhrTroy)
    * Max Herman III
    * Michael Feinstein
    * Steven Young
    * Jimmy Shine
    * Tony Thacker
    * Roy Brizio
    * Adam Gerry
    * Anthony Ribeau
    * Greg Sharp

    NOTE: Next week's episode (#13) is entitled "Ou Allons Nous".

    I watched tonights show and enjoyed it. However, I really didn't see that they made much of a distinction between traditional hot rods and R* rods, which is too bad.
    Maybe thats asking too much of a mainstream television show. Great series.

    I have seen every Show---Being a Senior (70) the Show certainly has brought so many memories back------
    Bruce Meyer's efforts to get Hot Rods @ Pebble was just great---Mickey going 400, Summers Bros, Alex, Chip, SoCal, Pete, Andy, Troy etc. all these really project their love and commitment to the Hot Rod fields.
    I certainly hope that the Show stays on for years to come!! Possibly someone could forward this Thread to the powers-that-be @ HD Theater/Discovery?

  9. I disagree. There were quite a few guys who gave their opinion on Rat Rods and Troy Ladd spoke about Traditional builds. Go back and watch it again. If I remember correctly,a couple guys commented on the Rat Rod craze keeping the Hotrod alive,even if they didn't really care for them. Yes,there was no real difference defined,but I think it was explained pretty good. I'm actually glad it was covered,showing some examples of both styles,to clear up some opinions,I hope.
    I hope the whole series will available on DVD. It's very well done....NO FLUFF!!!
    The H&H Flatheads and Hollywood Hotrods storys were fantastic!

    I too am waiting for the DVD's but they typically release them by season. If that's the case, they won't be out until the first season is over. I imagine they'd be out later this year, for Christmas shopping at the latest.

    I must've watched a totally different show, they seemed very intent on making that distinction, what the terms meant to different people, etc. Great episode!

  17. Episode #13 (entitled "Ou Allons Nous") aired tonight.

    This episode was the final show of this very well done TV series ... and therefore was a bit of a review of the previous 12 episodes ... including a brief summary of the history of Hot Rodding (from the '30s to present day) ... plus segments about SEMA, the Petersen Automotive Museum, the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, & the CHRR ... a little blurb about folks (like Troy Ladd & Mike Herman) that are keeping the tradition alive! ... and commentary from the following:

    (in order of appearance)
    * Chip Foose
    * Pete Chapouris
    * J.J. Barnhardt
    * Steven Young
    * Peter MacGillivray
    * Vic Edelbrock, Jr.
    * Leslie Kendall
    * Greg Sharp
    * Tony Thacker
    * Tom McEuen
    * Danny Thompson
    * Ken Gross (@Chopperken)
    * Bruce Meyer (@Deuce Bruce)
    * Troy Ladd (@hhrTroy)
    * Alex Xydias

    It appears that they have started over this week which is great news for those of us who didn't get the news soon enough to catch them all.

  19. First episode i saw was when they talked about Tommy Ivo and his four engine Buick. Ever since then ive been hooked.

    I sure hope to see it one day, either via DVD or in Low-D (regular, non-premium) cable. Gary

    Saturday, Jan. 29 @ 4 p.m.
    Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum presented by Automobile Club of Southern California
    Admission is free and open to the public
    Hear tall tales and bench racing exploits from some of the original members of the Low Flyers of Santa Monica - one of hot rodding's earliest and most important car clubs. Join us at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 4 p.m. with moderators Museum Chairman Alex Xydias and Jim Miller, son of Eddie Miller Jr, original Low Flyers member. Stuart Hilborn, Phil Remington, Dick "Magoo" Megugorac, and Bob Wenz will reminisce of their car club days and hot rodding adventures. Admission is free, courtesy of Dan Webb, who recently re-created the Phil Remington Modified!

    The Low Flyers of Santa Monica was a very competitive dry lakes racing club that reached prominence in the immediate post-World War II era. An incredible number of auto racing luminaries came from the club including Stu Hilborn, inventor of the fuel injection system that bears his name, and famed cam grinder Jack Engle. Phil Remington, instrumental in the development of the Cobra and Ford GT-40, and Indy 500 winning mechanics Jim Travers and Frank Coon were also members. After winning back-to-back 500s with Bill Vukovich in 1953 and ’54, Travers and Coon formed Traco Racing Engines and were responsible for winning entries for customers such as Roger Penske, Lance Reventlow and Jim Hall. America’s first World Driving Champion Phil Hill once remarked that as a young man growing up in Santa Monica, he was in awe of the Low Flyers.

    The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum is located at 1101 W. McKinley Ave., Building 3A, Pomona CA, 91768. For more information, contact the Museum at 909-622-2133, or visit http://museum.nhra.com.

  25. Our fellow HAMBer and good buddy Dean Lowe appears in the 2nd episode on lakes racing, running his '29 RPU in '61 @ Bonneville.

    How can someone get to watch the shows if they don't have cable. Cause I want to.
    Matt

  27. moparmaddnes, I emailed The Discovery Channel's PR site a couple of weeks ago inquiring if a DVD of the series would be coming out. Their response was that they don't select the programs that will be sold through their online store. They just said to keep checking. Never said who does make the selections.

    Started saving the series on TiVo this time through.
    Last night I watched 5 episodes w/ the wife and kids in the room and fielded a bunch of questions. The wife wanted to know how TV Tommy was able to run 4 engines at once. My son was all about the Bonneville times the Streamliners put up. My daughter just dug the pretty cars, especially the Chrisman Coupe. She told me it was copper like a penny. Makes me want to make a trip out to the Parks and Peterson museums w/ a side trip to Bonneville. One day......
