you know...we could start a social group called the "low posters" but then it probably wouldn't be that interesting because no one would have much to say:D

I don't know a lot, so I don't post a lot. I do read everything though. When I finally become a know-it-all, I will post much more often.

until then....

I've been reading HAMB for sometime enjoying the threads and finding great parts from the community. I too tend to do more reading and sometimes laughing out load at what was written. I live in a area where there are not a lot of gear heads so for me this is my neighbor hood. When I was a kid in my neighbor hood you listened more than talked. But I trying to be more talkative without getting flamed.

Personally I have been called anti-social, even by my wife. Most people confuse a quiet person with being anti-social. I just don't have a lot to say most of the time. But when I do I have been there, done that, had my hands on one, and have the T-shirt. When I post I know what I am saying, but at the same time I also know that someone else may have had a different experience. Their experience may have included something I didn't run into at the time. So mostly I read and don't post a lot.

I prefer to use the search and read. My few posts have been limited to my introduction and a couple of smartass comments to "OT" threads.

Funnily enough, the other day I decided to post on a thread because it was one of the type threads that wear me out whenever I am crusiing this forum...one where someone gives their personal preference on something (in this case "patina") and there are a bunch of posts back and forth with everyone stating their personal preference or tastes...there is absolutely nothing in this type thread that is going to help me with my car or learn more about this hobby. Anyway, I posted to say I thought it was a pointless thread...and someone responded "from the wise man with 6 posts in 2 years"...so, apparently I can't be wise because I had only posted 6 times on this forum.

Just as a note...I am most defintely not wise...but I know enough that I don't think making thousands of posts on this site is going to make me any wiser...reading thousands of on topic posts will do that!!!

I pretty much quit posting because of the posers, also. I bought my car in 1960 and just turned over 468,000 miles that I personally put on it driving EVERY day. Telling me it has the wrong wheels is just plain ignorant for somebody who only has some rice burner to drive.
A lot of people generously put a lot of effort into threads for our benefit on the HAMB. If no one posts on their thread their work sinks quite quickly down the board. I am another who has a lot more to learn from this place than to offer, but try and post when I see a thread that is interesting, informative or entertaining so as to keep it alive on the board. Otherwise, my posts are mainly questions. I hope some time to be able to reciprocate a little for what I have gained from this place.
Your opinion needed to be in larger print so that that do not contribute can maybe have a chance to reread what you just said and comprehend. We have ALOT of guys, especially in this thread that are "takers". All you do is take, take, take without giving back. You read a cool ass thread that perhaps you learned from YET you can't take one more second to THANK the person that you just learned from? You all should be ashamed of yourselves for not at least thanking the person for posting that build thread, that tech piece, whatever that you just read. Your mothers raised you better then that. Alittle thanks goes along way.

I personally know a number of old time HAMB members who aren't posting tech any longer cuz no one really showed their appreciation on the threads and they just dropped off in no time. This point is perfectly clear and can be seen on a daily bases when some OT thread gets hundreds of views and tons of stupid comments while the next thread disccusing something on topic and useful falls off the face of the HAMB.

Food for thought

and I wasn't actually going to quote anyone but the below guy, along with alot of you on this thread, is a perfect example of what I am referring to.

I listen more than I talk, so I don't post as much as I would like.... however I think some people post way too much by ONLY posting 'welcome from ....' to every new member to get their post count up for whatever reason.

14. Wow, hotrodladycrusr, that really made me think. I am just learning, and I really appreciate all of the knowledge and history I've learned the short time I've been here. It has taken a little while to see how things are done around here. Thank you to all of the "Old time Hambers" who educate us newbies!

16. Denise-

While I understand your point and largely agree...I'd like to point out that there are a fair number of long-term members of the H.A.M.B. that are, perhaps, even more guilty.

I have, quite a few times, copied/scanned diagrams, magazine articles, etc. for other members, including someone who has posted in this thread. These have all been at their request, either by PM or by e-mail. Some of these have been fairly lengthy & expensive to copy/mail. These have almost exclusively been requested by people who have been here longer than I have. I also get quite a few PMs & e-mails asking for tech help from H.A.M.B. members. These tend to be about 50-50, old & new.

In all that time, only two people have ever bothered to even say thanks. Until a couple of months ago, it was only one...a "newbie".

This isn't intended to be a whine & cheese post on my part...just a gentle note that (in my experience) the older folks are equally as guilty. :)

I am not going to take any side, but I obviously don't post much. I read a lot of the topics, and if I feel I can contribute something I will post, but I'm mainly here to just see what other people are building. When someone posts something up and has 30 posts of people telling him "good job" or "looks great", I don't feel I need to post what 30 other people have already told that person. It obviously looks good. Heck, I bought a 57 ford pickup off a hamb member. I only had 2 posts when I pm'd him so I'm sure he didn't think I was for real about coming to get it from him, but post count is just that, a post count. It is not a count of whether a person should be here on the hamb or not. A lot of people are also here to research or learn and many find there answers through topics already out there. I would rather have 10 helpful contributing posts than 400 useless ones, but thats just my 2 cents.

19. On other forums I subscribe to I mostly lurk. I try not to spend all that much time at the keyboard (My day job gives me enough of that).

This group is having more fun than anywhere else I been and this thread has prompted me to get some pics up of the Starliner so that I may bask in the wealth of knowledge and B.S. that is the HAMB.

So... as they say, "hold my beer and watch this!"

I only post when I can offer some definitive knowledge.
There is an enormous amount of talent here and and I wonder if the quality of my work is good enough.

I'm into cars and not the drama of 1000 "welcome" or "do a search" posts.

Also i type so slow when posting I have to log in again (LOL)

lvlynyrd,
Very well said. I will probably be a FNG for a long time. I figure if you have nothing of value to add why waste the time. Can't stand the me too replies or the x2 crap. I found this site and have learned a ton. I'm shopping for that project and when it comes home I will start a build thread. Until then I'm here to learn. Can't learn while your babbling.

I read 100 times more than I post here, there is so much information to be gleaned from the technical posts, and from so many of the non-technical posts as well. Thank you Ryan, H.A.M.B. admin and fellow HAMBers.

The problem with posting is that there is always the possibility for responses that trash-talk and worse. My take on trash-talk is that when I am face-to-face with my buddies trash-talking is absolutely acceptable, and even expected. The difference is that we know each other.

I for one, don’t want to be bothered by some trash-talking anonymous stranger, and I refuse to be drawn into a juvenile keyboard “finger-fight” with the playground bully. Unfortunately, this is always in the back of my mind when I post on any forum.

At 67 years old, I have been fooling with old cars since I was 17. In that span of time, I naturally have formulated my own views, ideas, favorite pastimes, and particular ways of expressing myself, as well as opinions on every aspect of my life, lifestyle, and personal choices.

I’ve been reading the JJ since 1998. Ryan used to solicit pictures of reader’s cars and a couple of times I submitted same. I’ve been off and on the HAMB on an intermittent basis since then. As others have mentioned, many of the ignorant and negative people and their silly profiling over the years have driven some of us away.

The HAMB, like so many things in our lives, has matured with time, and for the last few years I have been more likely to post if I feel I have something positive to contribute. It is my opinion that Ryan and company have a long range vision/agenda for this board, and it currently feels better to be here than in some of the other times. (Perhaps I have matured some myself.) :D

(I admit to being of occasional low self esteem and paranoia, so please consider this as you read this next paragraph:)

If you know me personally, and I specifically ask for your opinion, it is because I value your ideas about life, cars, relationships, etc. If, on the other hand a total stranger (uninvited) attempts to tell me what to do, how to think, or how I should change a behavior or pattern, I am getting better at totally ignoring them. Anyone who offers an unsolicited opinion relating to how I “should” or “shouldn’t” live my life is a fool, and I find less and less room for fools in my process.

For the first time I am more comfortable with my “low” post count. Thanks for the topic, thanks for hearing my views. GA

27. On a side note, all this talk of threads dropping got me thinking. I just checked and we (the HAMB) have 139k members and going..........it's going to be hard to keep the good posts alive. We're going to have to be dedicated and use the search function a lot more now. So with this many people a little courtesy does go a long way.

it's hard watching them grow up and leave for college. I remember the text only hamb like it was yesterday.

43gman- one thing you need to remember is this is the internet, EVERYONE is a big man behind the keyboard, pay no attention to them as long as your within the guidelines set by the board mods your golden. it's like everything....it's a great place despite some of the people.

I love to read the posts, but I dislike reading a really interesting thread with great pictures followed by 40 replies stating, "Cool, Sweet, Nice, etc. Especially when they quoted using all of the OP's pictures! Remember---Not everyone has DSL or T-1 speed internet.

Before flaming someone for choosing to not do something, please think about the reasons they don't. We are all made different and have various personalities, likes & dislikes. Now, have a nice day!
