I'm cruiser shopping and found locally a 57 Buick Century 4 door, in great shape, purportedly with a bad rear end. Got to get down to see it, but I thought I'd ask here: Would you repair it if it was blown or put a different one in. AND, can you recommend a good donor candidate that would be a fairly straightforward swap? THANX

Given the torque tube drive line, about the only suitable donor is another Buick.

  3. ^^^ thats right, unless you convert it to open drive, your stuck with Buick. Not that that is a bad thing.

If it is an automatic, it might not be the rearend. The weak link in old Buicks is the Dynaflow tranny. I am ditching the whole mess for a late model trans and Ford rearend. An Explorer rear end seems to be the right width. I adapted the Nailhead to the Chevy transmission. It has not been a cheap process and I am still working at it.

I asked the owner what made him think the rear was bad. Gift from Grandpa. Grandpa said so. So, we (owner and I) really don't know for sure why Grandpa's Buick won't go. Sounds like it could be a candidate for a drivetrain swap.... Thanks for the replies Gents... H.
