I.D on a ford 5.0

  1. I recently picked up a ford 5.0 block at a junkyard but have no clue what year it is, any help in identifing it would be nice

    Look for the casting numbers in the form E3AP

    The first letter is the decade, C=1960, D = 1970, etc. The second is the year of the decade, so in the above example E3 = 1983.

    These numbers are from the first model year that particular casting was used, so an E3 casting could have been used in 1983, 1984, 1985, etc. But Ford changed designs farily often so it would be a a good ballpark estimate of what year the engine is from if you use the newest casting date you find.

    The casting code is behind the starter. On 5.0 blocks the digits are only about .375" near the bellhousing bolt hole. Some 85 and up blocks will have two drilled and tapped bosses in the lifter valley for the roller lifter spider.

    Amen, brother. The other day someone asked me how many 'liters' a big block was. Hell, I don't know. I said, " 'A bunch', but it's three hundred and ninety god damn cubic inches. I know that for a fact. LOL
