Any advice on installation of new Melling High Volume Oil Pump and Pick Up.

Have my priming rod, just wondering about oil pan to pick up clearance and whether or not to pack the "new" pump with vaseline or some other method?

    Any other doos' or don'ts?

    Vaseline will work fine.

ok I put in the pick up and it measures 5.25" to the bottom of the pickup to the bottom of the block.

I measure the pan from bottom to top rail and get 5".

Is it ok to bend up the pickup? Not sure what to do? Any advice?

  4. Use the oil you are going to use to prime the pump. Do not use any RTV, Permatex or anaything else that may gum up your pump or come lose and plug up an oil galley. Use a light grease on the o rings and ***emble it. Suction pick up to pan should be close to the bottom to insure it has good oil level above and far enough away to get good suction, around 5/16."

  5. You won't need to pack the oil pump if you are going to prime it right away, just coat it with oil that your using. If your using a stock style pan you can pull the drain plug and look in the hole to see what kinda a clearence you have.I would think 5/16-1/4" is fine you just don't want it ****ing the bottom. You can also use clay to check the distance.I always heat the pickups in the bend,if you just pull up on them you can crack them at the threads.

Ureka!!! We have oil, filled filter half way and pour some in the pump as well. I didn't put the pan on just held a tub of oil up to the pick up.

Drill motor with priming tool in reverse and it came gushing out of the sending unit hole. YEAH!!!

Ok now new issues, bought two items from 440 source, new dip stick and windage tray. The dip stick end that fits into the block seems to be to big for the hole, anyone else come across that, should I just file it down?

Also I have installed the pickup and had thought that the pickup would slide over it some how, oops. Doesn't seem to, is this something that can be installed with the motor still in the car?

Well I got everything installed. Had to cut a 1/4" off of the oil pick up which provided 1/4" to 3/8" of clearance to the bottom of the pan.

One thing that almost messed me up was that I had pulled the dipstick up to installed the windage tray. It was kinda of close quarters installing gasket, windage tray, then the pick up, the another gasket and then the pan. I got it all together and when I stood up noticed that the dipstick was sticking up and IT WOULDN'T GO DOWN!! YIKES. Well by bending the tip of the dipstick a little I was able to get it all the way in but make sure you check this if you try to do all this with the motor still in the car.

Thanks for all your help. Now on to the vacuum on the 6 barrel.
