I remember a couple years ago when I was lurking around here, the infamous HAMB chops. Does that bit of magic still happen? I've got a '39 Dodge PU that needs a little off the top and no balls to attempt it myself.

Anyone in the Central Cal. area up for it?

Cleatus, I know your out there.

If it's on a weekend I'm game. Don't know how much help I'll be, but I'll do what I can. Hey Muttley maybe you can show him what not to do so he doesn't have a bunch to fix later;)

The guys that I know have chopped tops aren't on the HAMB. Creeper Larry or John Ford Man might have done it but not since I've known them. They'll definetely be able to tell who can do it locally though.

Killer led the first two HAMB Chops, but this year's event died under it's own weight. There was so much pissing and moaning about how much money was needed to buy food, drink and T-shirts that by the time the dust settled the date had passed for the event.
Many people donated a lot of their own time and expertise to make this event a reality and it was a real shame to see it die this year because of the squabbling over the cost. The car to be chopped was previously chosen based on the need of the owner...need was usually equated to youth, lack of experience, and lack of the big bucks needed to pay a custom shop for the job. Since we all seem to be on the "HAMB Auction" bandwagon, maybe we should auction off the chop to the high bidder. That way there won't be any bitching about how much it costs and we could raise some bucks to support the HAMB while we're at it.
    Jason, are you readin' this?

Also I think the last two chops just disappered. Meaning the cars that were chopped haven't been seen again. At least I haven't seen them. I think Killer really wanted to see the cars finished as well as myself and others.

    Jkustom, your car done yet?

fwiw, the Northwest version is where the guys doing the chopping chose the victim, not the other way around.

I would support another with a few conditions:

    1. Money is not considered. If you are gonna host one, you accept the responsibility to cover your own costs AND not profit in anyway.

    2. The host has to be a regular HAMBer and not some new guy.

    3. The host promises to teach while he does...

Having a second grader, I'm always getting lists of stuff the class needs for various events. You circle what you'll contribute and send it in. Why not make a checklist like that? Someone brings a dozen cut off wheels, someone brings a spool of welding wire, etc. (host provides the beer? :D ) Just an idea to defray the costs.

I don't see how anyone could possibilly bitch about a few bucks in food and drink in return for getting their ride chopped for free. I'm not exactly made of money but I could show my appriciation for the weekend. It's a pick up - half as much chop equals twice as much food!

As for disappearing into the shadows, not this one. I've had too many projects through the years that went by the way side but this one's not kickin' my ass. That's why I joined the HAMB instead of just lurking. A little encouragment and a shove in the right direction. Build within your means and you'll never be overwhelmed.

  18. So, we should not only donate our time and expertise, the shop space, electricity and overhead to do it, but we should also PAY for the most basic necessities? We don't charge a goddamned dime to do the chops, the ONLY thing the recipient was EVER required to procure was:
The basic consumables (wire, cut off wheels, etc)
Food & drink for those involved in the chop
    The Tshirts for the chop

NEVER did we ask for any set amount of money, it's a gimme thing, something we did for those who couldn't do. The first chop, the costs ran around $600
the second chop total costs were right at $800, last year's recipient was told to expect costs of approximately $1000, now if you're telling me that you can get a car chopped, roughed in and ready to finish for less than that, well then I guess you better make your reservation with whoever can do it for that cheap.

Like I said, it's not about the money, it's about helping those who need and deserve the help. Lots of folks donate lots of thier personal time and talent to make it happen and to have people accuse us of doing it for profit flat pisses me off!

I'd like to take part on one, if anything happens within a few hours from where I live. I've never done anything like that, but I'd be willing to do anything I can to help out, and learn at the same time.

Why the hell are you so defensive? I never accussed you of anything. My post wasn't aimed at you in anyway... In fact, my post is pretty much inline with what you are saying. The goal of a HAMB chop is to teach a group how to chop a car without the actual chopper being responsible for the money. This entire process was mismanaged last time it was attempted - I'll pay for the thing if I have too... It's not a money thing.

    DRAMA sucks.

I think Ryan was just laying the ground rules for future Chop/Gas or HAMB related gatherings. With some of the attitudes on here lately...I can understand his concern.

Ryan has always been supportive of anything having to do with the education, promotion and development of this hobby....being in the guidelines of HAMB related material.

I don't get the reference of the HAMB Chop being "infamous".....WTF?!?!
I thought they were all conducted in a professional and cooperative manner....

The one I participated in was a huge sucess, and a lot of lasting friendships were produced as a result.....

Somebody want to do another HAMB Chop??? Texas? Oklahoma? Colorado? Arizona? California??....Let's Get IT ON!!!

I'd do it again in a New York minute!.........Anybody that has anything bad to say about the past, and definitely the FUTURE HAMB Chop Parties.......listen carefully.....Get a Clue!

Stand by for a upcoming announcement on HAMB Gas 2005!!!!

I am,and I have already chopped one of those Fords for free at the Loy Lake Denison show last year.So why not do it again.Buy my lunch and consider it whacked.

  26. Ryan, you're right, I am defensive over the HAMB chops as it is a child borne of myself and Killer, I re-read your post and I see what you're saying, as for HC '05, Killer and I are ready as ever, just need to get some details organized.....

I know that when I attended the second chop I had a great time. Wish I could have contributed mor time . I know that the work done by guys on the hamb has been a rewarding experience to watch. I know my own project wouldn't have gotten as far as it has without the help of 60's style. Anyone know whatever happened to the second chop vehicle?

I'll bring my sawzall, air cutter, a boatload of wheels, my portable O/A rig, and an appetite for beer. But we can't do it before May because I'm booked.
