A friend of mine owns a flying service on the island of Guam and he is a true hot rodder. His big thing on the island is rock crawling and 4 wheeling but he has also done some drag racing there. John
I hauled a few car to Long Beach to be shipped over there for racing. The guy one guy bought.all caddy's 1959 and rents them out. That is one heavy car.
Guam uses english plates? I thought theirs would be in chinese. I think those might be some G.I.'s cars or something.
If you run across an old Beetle whose back seat has been replaced with a beer cooler, say hello for me. BTW, that coupe can't make up its mind whether to be a street rod (front suspension/engine) or a rat rod (duct tape, etc).
spent time in Asan in 1969, more correctly Polaris point, never saw a hot rod one! In pictures the most beautiful island in the world, real world, hotter than the hubs of hell
I have been to guam 6 or 7 times with the Navy and yes it is a us teritory. They have a big navy base and a airforce base there. They are supposed to be getting a bunch of marines from Japan in the near future. I dont think I have ever seen any hotrods there either. Lots of rice burners!
Ha! Well it didn't take you long too long to sniff them out! Hope your doing well bud, Im going to miss not having you at the Roundup this year. Maybe you can scare up some old GI tin while your out there and get Uncle Sam to ship it back!
Yes... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territories_of_the_United_States Guam, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C.,, American Samoa,, The Northern Marianas Islands, and the Virgin Islands have unfortunalely lost their right to speak in the House of Representatives.... http://www.wusa9.com/rss/local_article.aspx?storyid=129148 DC's license plates say it all: "Taxation Without Representation".... By far the coolest plate motto I have ever seen.... It must have been some bitter angry ****ers that proposed and then voted 'yes' on that one.... Anyway,, not trying to talk politics.... Just spreading awareness of our territories and such....
Am in Guam right now on a job. On the north side there is a drag strip/off road/motoX complex. I was here this past December and saw a late 30's coupe driving down the road accompanying a roll back with a Tbucket on. Been driving by a 56 Ford in a carport on the way to work site everyday. I heard there is a "cruise" every month at a different beach park, have not caught this yet though..
Guam is a part of The US ( a territory) I might add that I stopped there while in the USMC on the way home from Japan once & it is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen.
Can't say as i remember seeing any old iron there. Just a bunch of riced out hondas and what not... Man i'd love to be able to go back.
I was stationed at NAS Agana 1960-62 before there was ever a snake on the island. and it was a great place. I had a couple Kustoms and My work truck had a dual carbed Hemi that ran pretty hard (for a 15,000 lb Crash Truck) google MB-5 Bikes ruled the drag strip (an abandoned Jap air strip)
Chinese? Why on earth would they be Chinese? I lived on Guam from '67 to '74, my teenage years. There was a guy there named **** Marrette who had a gas station & later his own shop. Ran a 68 Nova that was pretty bad. Di lots of performance work. There were lots of cars there at the time, I remember a big block Barracuda at my high school. There were local guys building some cool stuff, a Toyota Hi-lux pickup with a 302 Ford motor, Datsun 510 with a 318 Mopar motor, (got to drive that one, wicked fun). Some guy on the island bought a brand new 1971 El Camino with a 454 and 4 speed from the local Chevy dealership, Atkins-Kroll.(Worked a summer job there) Had my '56 Olds 88 and '58 Chevy while living there. A friend of mine had a shop that catered to hot VWs. From what I understand there are clubs over there today and not just Tuner types. And yes, it is hot & humid, but you get used to it.
We use to rotatre down there in the Navy. Worst humidity I ever experinced. This is where all of the air strikes on Vietnam were flown from. There use to be some really cool "spy" planes going through there. I never saw any old iron but there were a lot of lizards there. It is now the Japanese equivalent of Hawaii. Lots of pretty places to dive.
I got off the plane, went into the Blue Marlin. Drank cold beer until the next plane. Yes it's hot and humid.
I would love to get stationed there. I have a friend that is getting stationed there for the second time and tells me that its a beautiful place to live for a short amount of time.
Its big enough. 30 miles long & 4 to 8 miles wide. In the early '70s the fastest car on the island was a '55 Chevy 2 door wagon running a mean 455 Pontiac mill if I remember correctly. Also remember a late '50s 'Vette that had so much carburation you could hear it ****ing as it went by. My buddies dad had a 1970 Torino GT with a 429 SCJ & 4 speed. There was also a shortened '57 Chevy with a small block in the village I lived in, and an early '60s Ford Galaxy that had something mean in it with some serious gears up in Barragada. I also remember a Vicky that someone had sitting on their property but wouldn't sell. Last time I saw it it was getting patch panels. One of our favorite places to race was the old Japanese air strip at Ritidian Point, at least until Air Force security shut us down. There were/are plenty of cars, just not on the scale of what you might see in California or other hotbeds of hotrodding. Hey Muttley how much larger than a 1/4 mile did we need?
Wow the Blue Marlin is still there? I remember drinking Harvey Wallbangers in there in 1973, just before I went to boot camp. Thanks for the memories.
DUDE Chinese Plates??? LOL Ive been there, and i have to tell you the women there are B-U-T-Full .. Almost like Hawaiian Babes....better looken then the O-so common blonde IMHO.. Guam is very close to the philippines , they might seem to be a little behind the great USA, but they are not...when i went there just about 20yrs ago everyone had a cell phone and they where texting... Go figure!!
