ive been seeing a few 40's 4doors around latley for cheap. since im only 19 i have no idea if guys "hot roded" these. im guseing every one wanted lighter 2 doors but i figure something cool culd be made out of these cars. what did guys do to these back in the day and how about now?
Some time ago, these were known as "parts cars." Now, you might consider them for a project, but keep in mind that while the initial price is likely less, the availability of parts is less, the parts count is higher, and the finished product will likely be worth less than an equivalent two-door sedan or coupe.
got a freind with a 40 ford 4 door , nice car . theres an original 40 ford 4 door on the knoxville tn. c.l. right now at a good price for a mostly solid car. hard to find solid cars around here. guys are building 4 doors now because the 2 doors been bought up. ive got a 55 fairlane 4 door . makes it easy for the family or freinds to get in and out . but i also got a 48 2 door sedan. check out this 56 fairlane. 4 door .
People used what they had back in the day. I have a few old hot rod magazines from the 60s and there are four doors that pop up every once in a while. My first old ride was a 53 Plymouth 4 door. It was cheap and drove (600 bucks) so I figured why not.
I actually think a lot of the 4 doors look pretty good. Maybe not hot rod worthy, but still some good looking cars.
Depends what you want to really do with it and what YOU like. I had a four door 51 Chevy. It was easier getting the kids in and out of. In the end, two doors have more value.
This is an old pic of a '40 Chrysler done up in the day. Pretty mild, it's got teardrop skirts, a shave, just minor stuff. If you want to build a hot rod with big fat tires and a huge motor, it's probably not going to look right as a 4 door sedan. But a mild custom 4 door seems to work well, and that's what you would have seen in the time period. Also, don't know if you're into lowriders but 40's 4 doors are big in that area and they look great with all the factory accessories on them and real low. I like that look too.
Nothing wrong with 4 doors (see my avatar). Nice for taking the crew, or in my case, Family, out for the day.
I am currently building a 46 Studebaker 4 door. I love the look, the fact that the rear doors are sucide from the factory makes it even cooler in my opinion.
I am a huge fan of the 40's. my first choice of builds are the 40's. I am finally picking up my first 40's era 4 door this week. a 1946 oldsmobile dynamic 4-dr fastback. these things look great chopped and slammed. I am also big on 4 doors (OK guys let me have it). But I am also married with 4 kids, so I need the room. anybody can make a 2dorr coupe or roadster look cool, but the real challenge is making a 4door family cruiser look cool! I will start posting pics once I get these projects underway.
Four door cars now are like the larger 3/4 ton up trucks. All the good two doors and 1/2 ton trucks are getting scarce and expensive. Now the four door and larger truck prices are starting to climb. Work with what you can find and in your budget.
if you're going to keep the car forever, and it's one of your dream cars, by all means do up a 4 door. But if you think that after spending all your hard earned money, and spending countless hours on it you might see a profit so that you can get your dream car, be prepared for a let down. All the people that say they like 4 doors either already have them, or its all they wanted to spend at the moment. There must be a reason that those 4doors in the ads have good prices and I'd guess its because nobody really wants one.
