Hey guys i want to use on of speedways quick release steering columns but i have an original 1941 ford steering wheel with the keyway. does anyone sell an adapter to go from three hole to keyway? the exact opposite of this : http://www.speedwaymotors.com/1928-1948-Ford-Steering-Wheel-Adapter-Hub,3307.html thanks a bunch guys, Bagged chevy
don't know anyone who makes one. You might have to get creative and whack the top of an early ford column tip off and weld that to a 3 hole plate.
I used one of these and made a cover for it..Just check the splines http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Garage-Sale-Grant-Steering-Wheel-Adapters,20187.html
Years ago the T bucket suppliers made a short conical shaft with a key way that matches your wheel to mount the popular T steering wheels at that time. It was welded onto a piece of 3/4" rod or an old steering shaft. I have always just harvested the shafts from worn out or damaged early Ford steering boxes and weld them to the shafts in the box that I'm using like an F100 box for example. It's a little more involved than just bolting on an adapter but it can be done. Remember that everything added to the column moves the wheel away from the dash. I'm not sure how the quick disconnect will work in your application.
if it were me i would make one out of a solid piece of steel, not welded. Da' Bomb on here made me a new steering shaft, so he could most likely make an adapter (i've never seen one for sale). also as limey steve about his columns......always give HAMBer some biz.
i bought speedway's tapered keyway to 3-bolt adaptor for my early Ford column. I had to trim it a bit on a lathe to get everything to fit fully on the taper, but the 3-hole adaptor took a nice 3spoke flat racing wheel just fine. So if the quick-release adaptor fits onto a 3-hole flange, it should work for you, unless I'm missing something. dj
Not sure what the center section of your wheel looks like, but I put a repop 40 ford wheel in my rpu. I have a 3/4" steering shaft. The 40' wheel takes a stock style keyed shaft. I bought this quick release from speedway: http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Pin-Style-Quick-Release-Steel-Steering-Wheel-Hubs,2060.html The aluminum hub has the typical 3-bolt flange. I held this up to the back of the steering wheel & centered it. I marked the 3 holes into the metal center section of the steering wheel. I drilled the 3 holes thru the steering wheel center section, then bolted the hub to the backside of the wheel. The bolts go behind the horn button area & into the hub-once the horn button is on the 3 bolt heads are hidden. Not sure if this makes sense. If it will help I can take some pics of it this weekend. I made an adapter using a chunk of aluminum, three socket cap screws, a stainless carriage bolt, and a nylock jamnut. The "x"s on the drawing indicate dimples to accept the stock rivets(this locks the wheel into place) along with that I ground most of the shoulder off except for a bit to still sit in the keyway of the wheel. The cap screws were recessed and threaded into the adapter using loctite. The head of the carriage bolt was rounded off to match the center of the wheel. The made part can be different lenghts to help windshield clearance issues. I hope this helps! Here is a crude draft of what I did, and some pics!
