Are there any good shows for traditional rods in the mid-atlantic area? I'm near DC and have found nothing serching online.
How far are you willing to travel? The Jalopy Showdown (May) and Showdown drags (Oct.) are in So. PA., both great shows and not too far from D.C..
Ocean City, Maryland has a huge event (6000+ cars) in May and a smaller one in September. It's about a 2.5 hour trip from DC thru some nice country, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Or you can do what all the older children do and hook up your enclosed trailer to your big-*** pickup truck, drive to the beach, park your trailer, get out your hot rod, and drive it back and forth in town, then back in the trailer and go home. I live here and drive my wagon most days it's not raining or snowing. I'm constantly asked if I "can't wait" for Hot Rod weekend...I drive my car, I don't trailer my car, looking at a bunch of eye candy trailer queens is fun for 5 minutes, otherwise, they're just clogging up traffic! H.A.M.B.ers drive, I drive.
There is also Jalopyrama in Annapolis! An awesome show... I haven't missed the Cruisin' Ocean City show in 15 years! Thousands of cars actually cruising the streets with lots to do at the beach!
Plenty of local shows where traditional cars are not shunned. There are several during the year that attract the traditional cars more than others. Ocean City is a big show but it is mostly ground pounding Camaros and the like. There are a few but not a large percentage. Reading the HAMB on a regular basis will keep you up on what is happening around here.
jalopyshowdown.com , May 21, 2011, best traditional R&C show around! Others - Jalopyrama - October 2011 Rumblers NYC - August 2011 Radir Wheel Party - August/Sept. 2011 Lead East - Labor Day Weekend
The Jalopy Showdown and the Jalopyrama are about the only _purely_ traditional events in the DC area that I know of. I live in Chantilly and occasionally attend the Saturday cruises at Burger King in Man***as, where there are some trad rods, but not a lot. Here's a website covering shows, clubs and events in the metro DC area: http://www.capitalcruisin.com/
Karb Kings Car Club in Fredericksburg and Baltimore have really good shows. They typically are scheduled for September. Last year we went to the Hotrod Hoedown in Philly. Three good shows
Thanks for all the quick replies. This site is amazing. I don't have a rod yet. I'm scheming on a nailhead-A, but it's still in the dream phase of the build The A is in the family, the nailhead is "somewhere out there."
.....Like 61cad says, the Karb Kings events are both great for traditional stuff. The Baltimore show just seems to get better and bigger now at the venue in Dundalk. If you miss the Jalopy Showdown in May for any reason other than you fell off a cliff, then you're not really interested in traditional hot rods. Same holds true for the Jalopyrama in Annapolis in October, becoming widely known as one of the best traditional shows on the East Coast, if not in the country.
Karb Kings Nomads 2nd annual spring show May 14th 2011 See flyer here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=564144
All of the shows mentioned above are really good ones, but nothing to do for a couple of months yet, in the immediate area anyway. If you are looking for something to do on March 25 & 26 there is a good but small parts meet in Frederick MD at the Frederick Fairgrounds (indoors and outside, 300 spaces total). I have been doing that parts meet for about 15 years as a dealer and shopper and I always find something kool to drag back home. I have seen several H.A.M.B. members there every year. Also if you want to drag some stuff over to sell or trade, the folks that run the meet are good guys, even if they are an antique car club. This year is the 41st. meet. Spaces are $50.00 indoors for 2 days and $65.00 for outdoor (outdoor spaces are larger but the weather can be a factor).
Jalopyrama. A must attend. Jalopy Showdown. A must to attend. And you may get lucky and get a shot of moonshine. Slim
