Rocket powered Model A's - lets see em !

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 4t6ford, Dec 31, 2009.

  1. Hoping for photos please of Model A's with Oldsmobile Rockets in 'em.
I'm putting a '56 324 into my '28 tudor and want to see how others have
done firewalls and motor mounts etc for inspiration.

So that's why every time I put gas in my oldsmobile some guy tells me he had the same engine in a model A "and it would burn rubber for a block". I must have heard this a dozen times. so lets see the proof!

  3. Thats one of the positives I'm hoping for!

Here's another project I am playing with, I know it's a "T" but it is on "A" rails. If you hadn't noticed it was inspired by Paul, here on the HAMB.

I see how you guys south of the equator get around the starter/steering box conflict,
you put the steering on the wrong side!

on my T with Olds on an A frame I used Hurst mounts and moved the body back
on the A with Olds on a custom frame I made the frame four inches longer between firewall and front axle, haven't gotten around to motor mounts on it yet..

I'm sure there are pictures around here somewhere.
I'll try to find some that aren't too stale

    here's the 303 going in the A framed T

    front mounts are nothing special,
bolted the Hurst mounts to the motor,
hung the motor in place and fabbed up the frame mounts

transmission mounts are a bit different,
I used stock 1950 mounts on the stock bellhousing

fabbed some brackets that hang off the inside of the frame

and tied them together with a piece of channel

  8. The wheel base on my Olds powered Roadster is 106 inches up from the Model A's stock 103 inches.the body was channeled 4 inches and moved back 3 inches.

Like Paul I made a "Hurst style" motor mount for the front and since mine had a modern automatic I used a dropped trany mount from Speedway.

The exhaust went over the frame to allow clearance for the starter and 1957 Ford steering column.

I'll see if I can find those photo's... in the meantime enjoy some videos!

  9. Thanks Dago, yes had seen yours earlier but hey I don't mind another look! I like the profile of your roadster - completely timeless.

  11. Wingnutz,
thanks for the videos, too kool! I have had my 324 running (on the floor) but your videos give me inspiration to get the car going!

I have an edelbrock 6x2 log manifold for it and will run limefire style headers over the rails (tudor is fenderless)

Hey Rod, I know you got a manifold , but did ya see the J2 manifold on Trademe during the week.

  16. Hey Kuztom. No, didn't see it. My Rocket is earlier than a J2 engine but it sounds like I can use the edelbrock 6x2 that I have because its the split log type.
HRK's rpu sorted for MCM mate? I been goin hard out on the '32 pickup all last fortnight so Mike can take that down.

At this point it is a project in progress but will be a Rocket powered A.

It is a 29 RPU sitting on a cut down AA frame with a '53 303, Ford 3 speed top loader and 42 pick up open drive banjo.

Here is a shot of it ***embled. I didn't take any shots of the setup while dis***embled.
I pulled the engine/trans combo from a 48 F1. I ***ume from the plates on the truck it was built in the 60's so the conversion is probably whatever was popular at the time.

Anyone have that old popular Mechanics or Science cover picture of a Model A ch***is with an actual rocket engine strapped to it?
Just need equal representation for all kinds of rockets.
And...have a look at the HRM issue with the feature on the Emperor (Imperor??) AMBR car in it. Beatiful picture of its A-V8 type ch***is with Olds engine.
