So my late brother left a few cars about and this is the one we are keeping at Casa de Skeezix. Seems to be a 1951 De Soto Convertible (may be a 1950) - I was lucky enough to work on my Grandma's 1950 S 14 and its been saved for the extended family - so I have some busted knuckle first hand knowledge on these cars...but this ---- well this is a dream for me. She is a blue goddess and mostly complete - I'll add more photos as I go. The general plan is to get her to fire up and cruise to the wine country and soak up the California rays. Rest in peace bro, I 'll do good by her
Sorry to hear about your brother man. It is Nice that you have a little piece of him though that you can work on and enjoy and it's a convert at that so that's twice as cool! Make sure you share some pics when you get it outside and in the open.
The word rare is overused, but I think that car must be rare I don't recall ever seeing one. Good score from your brothers life's journey.
Sorry for the loss of your brother. Nice DeSoto though. Yours must be a 1950 model.......here's a pic of a 51 and the grille is totally different.
This booklet is on ebay currently......might be helpful. Starting bid $4. http://cgi.ebay.com/CHRYSLER-DODGE-...684?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b84ae56c
And another. $4 buy it now. http://cgi.ebay.com/1950-DeSoto-Ad-...266?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item230d2aa272
This is a 49 model......grille different. I suspect ol Hernando, the hood ornament, may light up. You can probably look to see if there's a wire running there.
1950 'Custom Series' S14-2 Convert Cpe-6P production total: 2,900 advertised as: "New Desoto" and "A car built for owner satisfaction" Detroit built cars carried the serial numbers: 50062001 to 50148412 LA built: 62011501 to 62023225
Its is as far as I can tell - I'll get her home and review - lucky that he has scads of parts too - I hope the center logo part for the grill is already in stock. Course I found a set of HEMI valve covers so there is that Grandma's S14 has the tip toe transmission - and I kinda hope this one has a standard 3 speed. The rear seats are shrink wrapped (see pix) someone had a good start for sure.
So now it's a choice. 318/727 or o.e. Flat 6 and anything but the awful tip toe trans ? There must be a reasonable trans out there....
Sorry to hear about your brother, I'd be crazy if I lost one of mine. Now, about that car: that thing is pretty sweet! I vote against the flat 6!
Keep her original and drive the wheels off her....You probably won't be p***ing one on the road like her! Sorry to hear about your brother...Stay strong and take pride in HIS RIDE!
Perhaps the flatty and an alternate trans. ? There has to be an easy swap Want the wife to drive her too I'll save all original parts of course but front disc Is a must
