in front of the radiator. Can this be done? The trans cooler is about 7/8” thick, the radiator about 3”. Does (can) the transmission cooler need to be mounted vertically along the center line for clearance? Do I need any airspace between the cooler and the radiator can the cooler sit right on the radiator fins?

    On my 32's ... I always run the cooler in between the transmission and the radiator. Most repro 32 radiators have a cooler built in the bottom. Unless you have a bunch of converter or a lot a rear gear ... you generally do not require a extra cooler.

    I like to add a extra filter in line. It adds one quart to the capacity and keeps any trash out of the cooler and out of the pan.

    Thanks for the reply. I am not sure what radiator I have-it was new in the car when i got it, but there is no built in cooler and mine is more like a flat plate than a rectangle. And if it's not in front of the radiator, I am not sure where it could be-it's pretty busy under the car. Guess I'll need to post a photo or two.

    Nice plumbing Deuce Roadster! Do you ever have trouble with the short return line from the filter to the top of the trans breaking? 5 window they have heatsink coolers that can mount underneath. Back when I worked in a transmission shop we had a 1/2 ton shop truck with a turbo 400 that only had a cooler line looped from the bottom to the top fitting. With a 3500 stall converter we thrashed it non-stop for three hours and finally overheated the trans, it did have a temp guage.
     
  6. I like the filter idea!

    Never cared for the tube on the bottom of a radiator to cool the ****** so I opted for a circle track heavy duty cooler mounted out of sightHorizontal protectected between the frame and ******... the air flows great... see if I can find my photo's... coupled with A/N fittings and Russell lines it'll be trouble free for many years.

    These coolers are used on dirt track cars and are stone resistant and plenty strong.

    I have 52 thousand miles on the 32 and no issues yet. :D

    After the photo, I diid re-plumb the lines so that the filter and cooler got the fluid first.

    You can fit it but you might not want to. Think about this,sitting in traffic and boiling both fluids. I like to run one off the trans under the ch***ie in the frame rails to protect but get some air flow. Built in one don't offer much help with a simple tube in the radiator.

    The tube in the bottom of the radiator is also to help the trans fluid warm up.

    So, here are the radiator and the cooler I have to work with. I could mount the cooler either horizontally or vertically. What changes with the plan? Does there need to be an airspace between the cooler and the radiator? How much space around a heat sink unit is needed to get airflow if I went that way?

    From everything I have ever read, and I have done personally, you want them to touch if you put them together. A air space between them will create sort of a dead space and youll have eddys in the air and cause air flow over-and-through issues.

    Oh yeah, paint them both all black so they will blend toghether behind the shell instead of being so easily noticable.

    I've done something similar on two A builds as well, both with Model A frames. One was a flatty with C4, another 350 w/powerglide, neither had problems. An auto really should have some kind of radiator.

    Thanks for the "together" advice. Doesn't painting tthem reduce the efficiency of the heat transfer?

    Painting them black will actually increase the efficiency. Remember that black absorbs heat. When we were kids they always had the steam radiators in the school cl***rooms painted silver, which wasn't the most efficient color choice because the silver reflected the heat coming from inside rather than allowing it to be absorbed to the outside. But in those days fuel was cheap, so it didn't matter I guess.

    Just don't use a light colored primer or you'll defeat the purpose.

    Im no engineer, but from everything I read, the painting it black will not add enough material to reduce heat transfer.

    Not to hijack the post, but are you putting the 32 grill shell on with the stock hood? Reason I ask is I traded my truck for a Model A Sedan and also want to put a 32 style grill on. Ive searched and searched on here and havent really found any useful posts on it but I think it would be pretty straight forward.

    Looks like I will need new hoses to go from the hard lines to the cooler if i mount it vertically. Should I use fuel line? Would something like the Spectre steel braid over rubber hose work?

    if you are determined to mount it in front of the radiator where it can be seen then hot fluid in at the top and return at the bottom (horizontal). you got a lot of good advice and mounting it underneath. I have run ford power steering coolers (tiny) on sbc that will not tow or abused, temp ran on 180.

    Mine sits behind the 4 air holes in the grill shell . It's a setraub cooler .

    Nice car, but have you actually run it in traffic that way? Seems like you'll have a LOT of heat concentrated down at your lower engine/radiator site.
