Id catch his ass, duct tape him up, give him the date rape drug and throw his ass in the nearest zoo with a gorilla pin. That will teach him.

Car alarm w/ a real loud horn to wake you ass up, and if they manage to steal it have a GPS, LoJack device that you can track your car with your laptop...

Although we would probably all like to shoot a car thief or any thief for that matter, the fact remains that if you use deadly force and your life or the life of a third party is not in imminent danger, you had better be ready for a very long, hard ride up shit's creek.

X2 on the above stuff. I have a battery cut-off switch and remove a couple of key fuses from the fuse block. I even do this on my tow rig (I'm a racer). I think the best approach is keeping it simple. When at home, I take the front wheels off, keep it up on jack stands. Also, when stored, I'll take the lug nuts off. You just have to create a time consuming event. Unless they can get away fast, thieves will abandon the attempt.

Just thought I would add that LoJack has limited coverage and is noted where exactly their service is in effect on their web page. As you or I would do.....they take the stolen goods to an area of no coverage i.e. most small rural towns do not have LoJack coverage. I have researched the cell phone idea hooked up to a hidden charger (gotta keep the battery charged) They can locate a cell phone anywhere !

Yep...if they want it, they'll get it. The best thing you can do is buy yourself some time.
All you need really to start a vehicle (motorbike, car, truck, earthmover even a train) is ignition, fuel, and a start signal.
Nothing beats a kill switch, flashing light. Car alarms are a waste of space.

No wheel, no steering wheel are good ideas.
Battery master switch is also a good idea. Removeable master key.
the rotten bastard that wants to take your hard earned pride'n joy obviously has no scruples (or morals) so it's wise to have someone look out in shifts army style, chaining the vehicles together only needs a cheap bolt cutter to release all of them.

GPS is highly recommended, and a lojack type cut-out is also good. I just can't believe that in this day and age that there isn't a body employable to cover these things. Do your insurance guys offer a kind of service for meetings security on club hotel bookings?
i.e if a club of 12 people went to an event, surely they could book accommodation for a group discount (1), if all the vehicles were in one place for the night, then couldn't some security be arranged (2)?
    (3) if something went horribly wrong during your stay, isn't Security liable?

I think I'm lucky I don't have to carry a weapon in AUS, USA must have some assholes there. Any wonder you guys pack heat!

For us, it's a matter of putting the feelers out.
it the perp is found, well the magistrates are so piss weak they will give a sentence of a slap on the wrist.

I know some Irish guys couldn't afford guns'n'bullets, so they just tied the baddie to a chair and drilled the knees. Everyone has a cordless drill......

I think there's a lesson in this for all of us, don't you?

  10. Not that anyone would want any of my crap. But when I'm at Joplin I usually just let little mike sleep in the bed of my truck.

I have noticed a trend here. it seems that the cars being stolen are at major events. Maybe its time that the event sponsors step up with some security.

The idea of the getting together and sharing the watch duty on the cars is a good idea.If the group is large enough call a local security system and have them watch them overnite, split the cost. Whats really hard to stomach is all the posts about ,just let them take it and do nothing.I sure wouldn"t want you guys watching my back in a firefight. If the punishment for crimes was a little stiffer alot of this would stop. You got enough money you can buy your way out of anything.Everytime a thread is started on car theft it turns out the same. You think it will never happen to me,but when it does the attitude drastically changes towards thieves.

This original post had this right. In the Marine Corps we call this fire watch, and its been done every night that we are in the field for over 200 years. Not only is this method proven to work, its the easiest cost expensive way to do things. The fact of the matter is that a car is not worth a life, and 9 times out of 10 a scared person will miss at ten feet when shooting a gun at 10 feet or more. Plus not everyone is comfortable with a firearm.

The best plan is to get enough people together so that you only have them on for an hour at a time. If you can have two people at a time then things are going great. When my car club takes cars to shows we have decided on the fire watch method because it works. Even one person walking around the cars is better than none. The best way to deter a thief is being vigilant and in sight.

the CLUB, not the kind that locks the steering wheel, but the big frickin stick carried by the cavemen, in the hands of your fire guard...that should do it

When I was on the road with a stock car and we had to leave the trailer in a parking lot, someone always slept in the tow vehicle. Theft was not the only concern, people would also try things like pouring sugar in the fuel cell. But any movement of the car on the trailer would wake anyone up in a flash. Undoing a trunk lid is time consuming and hard if you replace one pin with a small padlock.

I agree with the fire watch method, most thieves will shy away from manned watches, get you club if possible to all park together, cone it with a tape barrier to keep others out and 1 to 2 hr watches of at least 2 people and the problem will disappear. Most hotels will honer your request. Just my 2 cents worth.

When I've gone to motorcycle track days and I've had my motorcycle sitting on the back of my pick up wide open and exposed with tools, and gas canisters. I go right to the lobby and park as close as possible.. Most hotels and motels near freeways, or at least the nicer establishments always have at east 1 security guard on duty. IF you have your pride and joy in tow or wide open spend the extra $20+ to stay in he nicer hotel. Also go to the securiy guy, and give hime an extra $20 or $50 dependnng on how much your car costs, and tell him to keep an extra eye out for your ride... All these other ideas are good one, but nothing beats someone awake and watching out..

I'm for the sharing of time watching the vehicles. If the thieves attempt to do something on your watch, a crowbar and piano wire to catch them. Have your buddies wake everyone else up and a have free for all.....then the cops.

    We can dream can't we?

I didn't read ANYWHERE that someone said do nothing, maybe I missed it. My point was ONLY to be intelligent about defending yourself and your property. Thieves are the scum of the earth, and every single crime should be brought to justice. I'm ALL for cutting the hands off of thieves!

My point is that taking a life over a material object is wrong. If your life, or the life of another (especially a family member) is in immediate danger you must defend.

A jury of 12 "car guys" would likely be in your favor, but a jury of 12 typical California liberal residents would put your ass in prison.

Also remember writing something like "I'd put two to the chest and one to the head just for entering my garage" could be used in court against you as premeditated murder.

Guys, I'm not trying to get this thread off track, only trying to remind some that we don't live in the Old West... but I wish we did!

Fire watch is a GREAT idea. I would recommend that anyone performing this act be armed for THEIR OWN SAFETY. I'd presume that anyone stealing a car would be armed for their own safety as well, and would be much more willing to take your life and flee than you would to stand and defend. As far as the watch person goes, maybe one of those hand held air horns to wake others in the event of an emergency would be appropriate.

Just be smart! Shoot someone unjustifiably (not justifiable to YOU, justifiable to 12 people who donate to kill the 2nd Amendment) and neither you or him will be enjoying your car. If he survives he'll sue you for everything you own and you'll be enjoying "Bubba" in cell block D.

If you're only removing a couple key fuses, then I guess they've got plenty left to reposition and get it started. I've got a battery disconnect too, and when it quit I simply got a big clamp style paper clip and clipped it across the terminals to get home. I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable that my battery sw. would protect me. Took all of 2 sec. to jump across it.

I just read about a small gps traceable device that was cheap maybe around 100 dollars. I think they make them for pets. You can track it your self. Hide it in the car. If you need to you could track your own car. Do a google search.
What a surprise to show up to some guys house with the police.

What about a car cover with a Prius painted on it?
Seriously, maybe we should re-evaluate what kind of hotels we park in?

I don't think it matters where you park it, public is public and the crooks stake these cars out and wait until the moment is right. After a busy show, all you want to do is get some sleep.

You'd be better off staying with local car people at their house and maybe locking the car up out of sight, especially with a high-end rod like that. I'm sure something could be arranged. Anyone would be welcome at my place, the car would be boxed in 4 deep or in the garage.

Funny coincidence, I know a couple of Irish blokes who reshaped a car thief's fingers using a baseball bat and a nice, flat surface. Guy pissed his pants even before the bat came down on his hands.
