Does anyone have any tech on making a windshield from scratch? Preferably for a 26-27 T roadster, square tubing or round tubing, bending to shape and making the channel for the gl***. Ive only seen frames made to fit out of existing frames which I dont even have. I only have the stanchions. Thanks
Thats a good way to go, buddy has a 27 roadster, gl*** mounted directly in stanchions. Looks much cleaner than my 27 with the lower 1/2 of stock windshield frame.
Someone on here did a tech article of just that on here about a month ago. Made a model A frame using water pipe I believe. I personally don't like 'em with the gl*** mounted to the stanchions, looks clean....a little too clean, says "street rod" to me.
I made one out of copper tubing....first bend to match the cowl...then cut a slice in the tube to fit the gl*** in...I'm not running it now because I found an original. but it was for a 1926 T roadster...I just braised it together. Tim MBL
I made one for my 26 out of electrical conduit.cut the slot withsheet metal shear.s (air powered) they left a 1/4 in. slot for the gl***. that stuff polish,s up real good also then just spray it with some clear.GREGG
I will give that one a try, what diameter did you use? I guess some thin wall tubing should work as well. I will have to figure out what to use for the 1/4" slot, maybe a machine shop can handle it. Thanks for all the input, got any more pictures?
I made a windshield frame for my '23 T from 1/2" X 1/2" X .065" square tubing with one side carefully ripped off in a bandsaw to form a channel. Bedded the gl*** in the urethane stuff, that comes in a caulking tube, that they use to bed windshields in newer cars. Trimmed the excess off with a razor blade and it looks like it is a "factory" deal. I was told by several bodymen to NOT use silicone. I used mild steel tubing, but wish I had used stainless like I did for the rest of the support pieces.
You can cut as slot with a cut off wheel.. It's gonna take a few wheels and a bit more time but it can be done.. A simple fixture would help too..
To cut the slot I used air powered sheetmetal shear. It leaves a 1/4 in slot.I believe the tube size was 3/4 maybe 1in.Just go grab a piece and see if it lok's right to you.I made one out of1/2in it looked to small to me.If you can find the book T-Bucket Roadster by Chester Greenhalgh it has a chapter on building one though not the same as a 26/27 it gives a pretty good idea of what to do.The book is usually at barnes and noble you can just go look at it there.GREGG
It might be a good idea to make the channel for the gl*** slightly larger than a 1/4" to allow room for the silicone or rubber what ever is used. I think I will just silicone on mine to make it simple.
