Chevy guys...... I have a block, casting #3896948. This number doesn't show up in my chevy manual. Anybody know what it is? Definitly an early block by the provisions for a draft tube and the oil canister. It seems to spec out, bore and stroke, to be a 283 but this is just a junkyard steel tape measurement. Way to cool to p*** by.

    Thanks in advance,

Thanks! I picked up this motor for my Model A. Apparently the motor was recently rebuilt and a set of late smog heads used in place of the small chamber stuff, probably to avoid the cost of redoing the origionals. It was probably a real dog and as such, was stored for about the last ten years or so in a local garage.

A good set of heads and a mild clean up and I'm in buisness.

Thanks again. It's just what I wanted.
