Hey everyone! I'm trying to put my rebuilt fuel pump in my straight 8 but it wont go in? I've searched this forum and saw that someone had the same problem ( but with a different engine ) and i tried some of the tips you guy's gave him but they dont work for me. I dont know much about cars but i'm learning as i go. So far it's me and my shop manual but it's not really helping right now. Anyone have any similar problems? If this helps, It's a dual diaphram pump with a gl*** bowl. I tried turning the motor over to move the cam but it's still not working. It's been 1 day and an hour and a half today......still working on it.
Does the pump lever move by hand with a little pressure? If it does put the pump in the hole (with the gasket between) as far as it will go and the start the bolts. Keep tightening the bolts and it should force it all the way in. You shouldn't need too much force (15 ft/lbs.). Is this a pump you bought rebuilt, or did you have your pump rebuilt?
Yeah the pump moves with a little pressure. I started to bolt it on even though there was a little gap in between the block and the pump ( on the bottom ) but i got scared that i was going to break the rocker arm or the bolts were going to strip so i stopped. I was told that the pump should go in with no problem but 2 day's and 6 hours later, I'm still looking this thinking WTF? If it's ok to tighten the bolt's part way in then i'll try that. There's only like 1/4 of an inch between the pump and the block. Oh yeah, I bought a rebuild kit for the pump and rebuilt it myself.
That sounds right. It's almost impossible to hold the pump in by hand!! I was curious if it was the right pump...
Thanks for your help! I'll try bolting in the pump right after work and I'll give some status updates!
Update 3/10/05 Well i finally got that fuel pump in! the only problem is my car wont start. It turns over but i wont catch. I looked at my Carb and it still looks like i'm not getting gas in it. Ahhhh!!! I'll figure this out. I'm going to check my fuel lines.
Sammy, Test if your pump is actually working. First make sure you have gas in the tank. Then remove the fuel line that goes from the pump to the carb, and have someone turn the car over. If you don't see fuel spitting out of the pump, then you probably put it in wrong. Sometimes pumps need to be primed this way also, then you hook up the line from the pump to the carb and all should be good. I've had to do that with an electric pump at least. Mike
Well after 2 weeks of messing around Mike and I finally got her running. We had to blow some air in my lines with his compresior and that did it!!!! She fired right up after that. Since i know i have all this stuff in fuel tank, I'm going to have to find a new one or have it cleaned. Thanks for all your help everyone and thank you Mike for coming over and helping with my car.
