Roofs are caving in under heavy snow and ice

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by CTFuzz, Feb 2, 2011.

  1. The roof of a garage in Providence caved in about 9 a.m. There are antique cars housed inside the building.
In Cranston, another garage roof collapsed early Wednesday . A cl***ic Jaguar was inside that garage.
The first guy had hired workers to remove the snow, they were an hour too late.............People around here tend to build garages with the wrong pitch for a New England winter.

I've shoveled off my garage roof twice this year, first time in the 33 years we have been here. Fellow HAMBer just PMed me to say he helped clean off a roof that had 10 inch I Beams starting to bow. This hasn't been a good winter. Be safe up there shoveling.

a 10...12, or even 14 pitch could have kept most of it off.
I think my shops pitch is close to a 10/12
    and my house is 12/12

not much stays on it, at least not for long

    either way..that ****s.
Had a cabin up around Hammond bay..****er had a flat roof..(i know stupid, i didnt build it)

Had to go up in the winter to shovel it off every now and than..to avoid the cave in

I was up on "Mt. Slick Willy" (garage roof:p) two days ago to shovel and clear off my low side of the barn. The metal roof over my shop had been keeping up with the snow till this morning when the rain turned it into 8" of cold Cream of Wheat! Hopefully what I was able to clear off will be sufficient until the big meltdown!...When is that coming??

Although I agree that I hope no one was hurt, I'm thinking that the owners of the cars care.

Time to check on you policies people. Ask all of the "what if's" and get it in writing.

Had to shovel off both my garage and house roof last weekend. The snow on the garage roof was 24 inches deep.Glad I did because we got another foot of snow yesterday and 4 inches today topped by sleet and ice.I sure don't want to see my Chevy with the garage roof laying on it.The news just reported a number of roofs have collapsed today and there were numerous reports of barns and business with flat roofs that failed earlier this week. They reported that one one building housed a business that restored vintage and cl***ic cars but didn't list what the cars were were in the building at the time only saying that several were destroyed. This has been a tough winter and it's only half over!Time to move south.

  11. I should add.....No one was hurt, thank God.

Knowing your policy is very important and that's why Agreed Value Policies with Grundy and Hagerty are the best for cl***ic cars.

I hope everybody's okay in CT. I'm glad I roof raked last weekend. We got 9" of snow yesterday and another 8" of heavy stuff today. Here's how it looked today. Boy are my arms tired!

Ive got an old roof rake that was made in the 50's so i think it counts for traditional.Seriously i hope people are smart enogh to stay off the roofs to avoid injury or death. We just had a guy up here leave behind a family of seven because he had to clean the snow off his barn and stepped right through a fibergl*** panel to his death.

Guess we're lucky in Wisconsin, with the 40-60 MPH winds last night it cleared off all the roofs. Problem is now it's all on the ground. Highest drift measured 70". Sure am thirsty after all that snow clearing :)

No kidding, and the more modern yup houses have all sorts of weird intersecting roofs to trap drifts. Can't tell them anything though, because they are smarter than us low lifes..... my son is clearing roofs for contractors; 3 days ago they did a million dollar 5 year old house with m***ive cracks in the roof beams...also cracks all through the sheetrock ceilings and walls.

I spent a lot of time in central Vermont in 1970 and the older houses up there have severe pitched roofs with at least the lower 4 feet is steel roof instead of shingles, so the Ice can't dam up. TRADITIONAL works

I've worked for 4 days clearing most all of our buildings. The house is not done completely and I did get a leak in the kitchen...went out and cleared that area and it stopped.

Just finished fixing our small dozer bucket loader, and as soon as my son comes back from doing roofs, maybe he can push the snow into next week:D

Collar-beams and dragging the snow off of the roof when possible are good.
I braced my garage (5/12 pitch) at 5' from soffit and added cross braces and she's good.
A rope with a section of 2/4 tossed up and pulled off gets the snow off of there without damaging the metal roof.
We're dragging barn rooves left and right here.
Being vigilant and knowing a problem before it becomes one helps?

The roof in a vacant part of the building my shop is in collapsed over night. I guess its time to start shoveling roofs.

    F&J,
There's a guy near here that built a box frame from 2x4's with a rope set up that drags rooves.I stole the idea from him.It gets heavy with the snow, but works really well if you start low and pull to the edge then move up.
My pool-brush-on-a-pole moves the snow too.
    Best of luck to ya!

I had to clear the neighbors roof as my hot rod was under it!
