    Hey guys,

I'm thinking about selling off the 4-speed Toploader in my '65 F100 to finance a T5 conversion and hopefully a rering and cam in the 302. I know something is only worth as much as someone will pay for it, but what is a good asking price? I haven't checked eBay, as sometimes it's hard to dial in starting prices based on what you see there. According to the guy I got it from, it's a 1966 4-speed Wide Ratio from a big block Galaxie/Fairlane. I have no number from the trans yet, since as of today the truck has about 4 feet of snow surrounding it. :D

So, like I said, assuming the guy is correct on ID, what's this puppy worth?

my dad swears they're worth a big bill, but I think the overall price is has come WAY down with folks moving to 5 speeds. they're pulling best money with resto guys IMO. I still think they're probably worth 5 or 600 to most folks--maybe more if you've got the right numbers for someone.

been considering the same thing myself. I've got the t-5 and adapter already for my apllication--trying to talk a buddy with a tranny shop into doing the swap in exchange for the tranny (will require modifying tranny mount too).

I know a lot of guys like the big-block ones because they're pretty bulletproof, and work great for drag racing.

33willys, I'll be sure to do that, Thanks for the tip!

The normal big block trans is no stronger than a small block trans. The strongest toploader has an 1 3/8thsX10 spline input shaft and larger main and output shafts, they were normally behind 427-428 FEs and 429s,they were also 2.32 first,VS 2.78 first for small blocks and 390s.The small block input shaft is around 3/8 inch longer in the pilot bearing area. There were also different length tailshafts and tail housings.I'm not bagging on what you may have, just trying to give you an idea of might have. They are great 4-speeds,ran them for 30+ years in my small block Ford powered 65 Comet, run a Jerico now. ROY.

65 Comet, thanks for the info! I've been a GM guy for forever, and if we were talking Muncies or T-10s, I'd be up on all of this info. But Fords are new to me, so I appreciate you taking the time you let me know.

hammeredt, I know, huh? My daily driver is a 5-speed Tacoma, too. I'm throwing all my forum usernames awry! Oh, and totally, Maine is in the Southwestern part of the state. :D
