So Im talking to a guy about doing flames on his dodge pick up truck blah blah blah......pops the hood to show me the "V-10" cool as **** looking thing I never knew. ford has a v-10 also (to much time in the garage i guess) anyone know anything about them? like can ya get them in a junk yard or are they gold? I think one might be neat in my Mercury! FRITZ
The Dodge V-10 is based on the Magnum versions of the 318/360, and they share a pile of common parts (they were made at Mound Road Engine with the 3.9L/5.2L.) It only shares one part with the Viper V-10. They've got a cast cranks, steel rods, cast pistons. The head design kinda blows, but they clean up with some porting work. They weigh a TON and eat gas like a funnel, but make m***ive torque. You could probably rig a sweet multi-carb set-up with the way the intake is made, but you'd have to get around the coil pack/no distributor thing. I think usual annual production was around 20,000, so they're out there. They dropped them about the time the new Hemi came out, since there wasn't much of a power diffference. If I was buying one out of a junkyard, I'd try to do a leakdown test and pay attention to the end cylinders especially- they're known for bad valve seats on the ends.
I saw a brand new Ford 10 cyl at a swapmeet here a couple years ago,CHEAP.Might have been "warm". Still sitting on the factory pallet. Not as long as I would have expected. Removing the factory EFI would be easy enough, no idea what they run for ignition,or bellhousing pattern. Terry Cook has a 10 cyl for his Boattail roadster.
Ian!...Thanks again for the brush stuff.........was thinkng out loud ya know, would love to work with some new teck for a change, I'll have to let the guys at the junk yards laugh at me when i ask 'em about an engine, LOL FRITZ
The Fords "lose" plug threads to the tune of "buy new heads" (I'm talking 50K engines), and the Dodge's blow holes in pistons (usually #7) and have head cracking problems - again, with engines 30k to 70k on them. Novel idea, but my advice is stay away. Part$ are very expensive for both of them ($7K for a block and reciprocating ***embly on the dodge). I owned a V10, and wrenched at a Ford dealer, which owned a Chrysler dealership. These were not isolated incidents... To the best of my knowledge no one makes any parts for them either except exhaust and superchargers...
Viper engines only come set up for standard trans. Had to swap some Dodge van parts on this for the automatic trans. (Couldn't use the 6 speed as owner has NO arms) Computer was about 3K. Engine cost new 12K.......OLDBEET
I thought about the same thing. here is what i just found doing a quick search. These are all V10's. there where a lot more but these where what I would consider good prices or cheap. At these prices it sure as hell is tempting. I did a lot of work on a 50 Merc going together here in Phoenix that has a v-10 out of a Ford van. We had to custom make headers to get it to fit, swap oil pans to get a rear sump, whack the front crossmember to clear the oil pan, set the firewall back quite a bit, make a remote oil filter arraingement and several other annoyances, but for the most part, it does fit. There is a company in Texas,(don't remember their name) that can reprogram the computer to work in this application. The thing is unbeliveably heavy, and really isn't that cool looking. Most people who look at it think it's a 460. If you can't generate instant response, then it's probably not worth the effort.
I guess now you guys know why ya see small block chevy's & Ford's in everything, But for 600 or a grand the price dont seem to bad, the "it heavy" thing get me to worry and if its ugly ,...well, then its just ugly. The viper dodge thing didnt look to bad, kinda nice but for 15 K with a computer i could start to build another bubble car! Sorry Ian no bubble cars for a long while. I'm still trying to get back on my feet from spendding what i did to build and show the last one. I think the "outlaw" clone #3 is up next or a quick trike with a ford 4 cyl. FRITZ
I've heard good things about the dodge v10 and seen a few in hotrods. The ford on the other hand is a rather ****y motor. My father-in-law bought a v10 wrecker last month and ended up returning it because it couldn't get out of it's own way (ended up going deisel). I've heard similar stories about performance and also negative things about longevity and service (not to mention gas mileage!!) I'm frankly pretty unimpressed with fords new v8/v10 platform. I own a f150 with a 4.6 and it ****s too. My old GM 1500 had tons more power with it's humble tbi350. Might be "interesting" as a hotrod motor but probably not worth the effort.
Yeah, the Ford mod motors (4.6/5.4/6.8) are very low in bang-for-the-buck. I have 2 of them for some reason. You really need a power adder to make them go, not that there's anything wrong w/ power adders! IMO the only good ones are the blown Lightning 5.4s and the Cobra 4.6s. Even then, the electronics and the intakes don't exactly lend themselves to a clean, trad look . The best looking ones I've seen have been converted to either a 4-barrel or multi-Weber setup, with a conversion to a cam-driven dizzy; these would look good as hotrod motors but even then, there are many less expensive alternatives to getting a unique look and going fast. You could do the same w/ the 6.8L v10 but it would take more work since there are no speed parts available for it other than a twin-screw blower. Then again, for $39,500 you could buy "The Ultimate Hot Rod Engine"! http://www.karkraft.com/engines.htm
I have a V10 in my ford crew cab dually...it pulls strong enough...definately gets out of its own way...just can't p*** the gas station...10 MPG with the auto trans with OD.....If you throw enough cash at a new intake,headers,chip...it would run stronger and maybe even get 12 MPG (if I could keep my foot out of it)
Hey OLDBEET- Did the owner of this car also have a green roadster? I think it was called the tree frog or something like that. I remember seeing him around North Seattle. That ride looks awesome.
No pics now, the car is totally apart for paint. It really looks like a 460. The fuel injection is aluminum so it could be polished. The valve covers are plastic, and I don't know if there are any cool replacements. Probably not because it is a truck engine.
For an interesting look at the Ford Modular's potential as a hot rod powerplant please check out www.sullivanperformance.com
wow!!! that is pretty crazy...my dad and i drooled over that car and wondered if he worked for the power company. Just speculating and all. He sure has some cool cars. Nice work dude!!!
