one of the things about the older homes is that the attics' aren't insulated like a newer home, the heat from the house melts the snow.

Most roofs are designed for a 12 inch snow, figure a 25% over build, 15 inches. Want to know what is on your roof, take a one foot square of the snow on the ground, box it out, load it in a bucket or 3, melt it, not over heat just in the house. Use a fish scale to weigh it, minus the bucket or 3. Is your shop 1000 sq ft, multiply x 1000. There you go, did you **** a little? Buy a roof shovel and pull the snow off, DO NOT GO ON THE ROOF. Use good sense when you walk into a shop or a building after a big snow, look up, what does the feller have up there? 2x4's 18 inches on center and a 20 inch snow. I think I would do my best Fudd and walk out vewy vewy slowly, come back in a few days, maybe call first to save a trip. If you see some thing that you don't think will support the snow come back later, better a chicken doubter than a dead fool. Oh yeah and any creaking just plain F'in run for the door and 50 feet further.

Am I wrong? Or did I hear people laughing and joking in the background in the videos of the building collapse?

Nearly 40 years ago, I witnessed 40 inches of snow within 24 hours in the mountains near Deep Creek Lake Maryland. Hunters got trapped in wilderness areas and had to be air lifted out or had provisions dropped by parachute to survive.

Enjoyed my honeymoon there 2 years earlier in 18 inches of snow. My 59 Ford pick up did fine in the stuff.............

We had a Bodyshop Roof go down early this morning in Syracuse. The last time I was in that shop (3+ years ago)
that guy had a lot of older cars. The business wasn't open at
the time so no one got hurt. The Roof is flat to the floor so if
there are any cars in there; they are ready for the s**** yard without even seeing the crusher ! !
The best thing the I've ever done was to put a Steel Roof on my house 2 years ago. I used the Commercial Grade (24 guage)
stuff that I saw on the Roof of a Red Lobster Restaurant. The snow just slides off. We've had over 115 inches of snow this year and it just keeps coming. As for you guys in California,
"you ****". Just kidding. I'm just jealous. Think Spring.

Ya you did but I would equate it to nervous laughing if that...those people were real lucky. Right around the end of lunch break and many ran for the doors:eek:

There was a restaurant in Middletown that collapsed yesterday all over Main St- Someone heard a cracking noise, the fire dept came to check it after evecuating the
people inside- they came out and told everyone standing around to run- seconds later it went. My old barn has real 2 by 4 rafters on 24 inch centers- and about 2 feet of snow on it- I am not going to go in it till the snow melts! Jim

The frozen snow & ice we have been experiencing in the Northeast puts a heavy burden on buildings especially pole barns and flate roofs. Have people really forgot they have to clean them off 4 inches of ice is 20lbs per square foot. With the freeze & thaw the thickness becomes greater.

Sunny California.................seems I saw Mud Flows running down the streets and into garages a few weeks ago. They showed a '66 Mustang buried up to the door handles in a guys carport in the High Desert on the news. Everywhere has it's own set of problems. The San Franciso earthquake destroyed quite a few Hot Rods that were parked in garages that fell. The wild fires have burned down garages with Hot Rods and Customs in them before the owners could get them out........... We all need to be insured for some stupid reason or another

I'm on Long Island and went out to look at my garage roof... its okay. The house has a good pitch to it and little ac***ulation.

CT and MA got clobbered in comparison to what we got and we thought we had it bad. The last 2 that we ducked, they got. How many days until spring?

Be careful if you have to clean off any roofs. They were cleaning off flat roofs in the industrial park where I work.

When I lived in Alaska shoveling off the roof was just something you did. You didn't wait for the thing to cave in.

I would love to live where the weather is nicer but I don't want to live in a city and gridlock. I am a fisherman and I can drive for 20 minutes and fish without wanting to clobber someone or having them right next to me. In my opionion California is a great place to be from. Oh and the snow removal is safer with a plate of aluminum on a pole, just drag it off. In my hometown they had a building colllapse on a restored Model A, but at least no one was hurt.

The Providence garage is our friend Jeff's. His 27 T was crushed. Frame engine and wheels look salvagable.

This is a spooky thread. We are in northeast Indiana and have had one of the most interesting storms I have ever seen here.

Not a huge depth of snow, but we were in between the rain to the south and the 24" snow in Chicago. The result has been about 6-7 inches of solid sleet/ice on the ground and on the roof.

There is no moving any of it. I can walk across the snow in the backyard without leaving any footprints. Crazy weather for here.

You guys have me a little freaked about the cathedral ceiling in my two car garage now...
