Bore the 221 flathead

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by flatordead, Feb 3, 2011.

  1. Does anyone have bored a 221 block to 3 3/16 std bore. They had done it in one of the older Tex Smith books, but my concern is that the lower 4 head stud bores are too close to the cylinder wall. I'm a little afraid cracking between the wall and said stud bores.
The block I have is bored 3 1/16 +.080 with almost no wear, but the pistons are junk and I can't find .080 pistons nor rings. Seems nobody has them. It goes up to .060 in the parts listings, but no bigger. I have a few very nice sets 3 3/16s that I would use if I can't get the small .080 over pistons/rings.
    Any opinions............

I've had two 221 bored .125 to 3 3/16's. One was a 1941 block and the other was a 1937 21 stud. No overhheating problems or anything else related to the over bore.
