Sure....by replacing the 401 with a 455. So, in reality .........no. What are you up to? Worried about the starter on a later model tranny? Or is it a clearance thing? Now I'm curious.
Not sure how you could do that. There is a oil filter on the right side, and the casting and machining on the left side that holds the starter in place does not seem like there is a possible switch to the other side. I have had good luck with running the steering shaft past the starter on the left side, I had to hold the motor over about 3/4 inch to make sure I got past the starter ( but the factories did that kinda thing all the time for clearances. Mine is in a '36 Dodge, so not a wide frame. I'm curious too, what are you thining? Rodshop
The reason for the question is a matter of steering box clearance.I want to use a F-100 box and column in a '32 and space gets REAL close;we offset the engine one inch and it was noticeable.May use a stick because they supposedly offer a right starter bellhousing;anyone know who makes it?
Never heard of Nailhead bellhousing with a right hand starter, may have to do with the oil filter and bosses on the block...
Thinking maybe use some U-joints and go cross steer or think about Cowl steering. Josh has a 401 in his Pickup and I'm pretty sure he is running a cross steer set-up. ZMAN...you have steering on the Roadster yet?
In addition to being rather difficult to find (at least in my experience) stickshift setups for the later nailheads go for major $$. Good Luck. Check here for adapters to many other popular transmissions: http://www.transmissionadapters.com/53-66_nailhead.htm Mike
There was a starter housing l/r switch for the early Olds V8, but not for a nailhead. The mini starter is by Tom Telesco...CT I think. Frank
The mini Starter doesn't offer a whole lot of clearance for you but it is shorter so you can mount the box ahead of it. I can sell you one for a far better price than Telesco. Another option; although daring; is a CSI crank mount starter. Spendy and you need the room ahead of the motor but it works!
