ford column repair

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1oldtimer, Sep 13, 2010.

  1. the subject: '54 ford panel with a toyota p/s box and a column problem.

the column was cut way to short (8" of exposed steering shaft in the cab) and the was no mount on the floor, so the column drop was flexing.

the solution was to extend the column with muffler tubing, get a new steering shaft made (thanks Da' Bomb). extended the column via homemade aluminum V block and use a modified floor plate (mid fifty). bought a u-joint and floor mount from limeworks (thanks steve) and made a fuax shift tube to hide the turn signal wiring (nos switch, thanks ebay :)). removed alot of the hokey repairs/work and put it back to stockish. now back to the wiring and grill.

  3. Man, that's a slick looking fix. Motivation for me to get the ugly GM tilt column ripped out of mine. Thanks for posting it up.

  4. yea, ditch the tilt :D. if i had more patience i would have made the floor plate and mount. i bought the floor plate with a mount from mid fifty, it was a chunk of 2" pipe (1/2" tall) welded to the plate with 2 set screws . the stock column is 1 1/2" so it was too much gap, plus it looked like ****. the best part was the steering shaft Da' Bomb made for me, it was from plain bar stock, fit like a glove with all the stock bearings and stock steering wheel.......and he did it cheap!
