Well I got alot done on the 39 Dodge Truck this weekend! I fabbed up the motor & ****** mounts, and got them hung. I still have to fab up gussets for the motor/****** mount tabs, but thats easy enough. I also got the front end hung and done. All I gotta do now is make rear mounts for the radius rods to mount to. I wanted to get the motor/****** hung first so I could see where it sits before I mounted the radius rods to the frame. Its sits right where I planned though, so I might have to buy a lottery ticket. This weekend I'll get the rear hung, and fab up a tubular K's to finish up the frame and get it rolling. Heres some pics:
Lookin neat-o... Just wondering, could you show some detail pics of the front spring perch? I see you're not using a round tube up front. I'm wondering about the theories behind using a round tube up front. Give me some of your thoughts on using the square tubing for the front crosmember....(if you will..) Tingler
Hello. I'll be glad to take some pics in the next few days for you. Theres really no difference in function between a round or retangular crossmember. Some prefer the look of a round crossmember, others the rectangular. On this truck the front crossmember will not be seen at all, as the grille covers it up, so I built it from the same 2x3 box I built the frame with. The perch is really simple-just some 3x4 .25" wall angle gusseted, with the spring on top of the perch. I'll snap some pics for you though
Thanks for the nice words guys! Gonna start prepping the rear and getting it mounted as soon as my link kit gets here. I'm excited to get it up on wheels! Plus, thanks to fellow Hamb'er "popsrods" I now have a project in the wings(see pics) with the 29' Model A Fordor body I bought from him. He's a great guy. The body is in great shape, I am so happy to have found it! So now I wanna get the truck done to start on the sedan!
Hey,I thought I was the only one around here with a '39 Dudge! Although I'm only using the cab and bed. How high of a kick are you running in the rear? I'm getting ready to start frame mock up in the next week or so if I can get enough **** out of the garage. The lower the better. Keep us posted w/ pics. Katuna
Cool, another 39'-don't see them often! The rear kick up is 13", and the cab will ride at 5" off the ground. Post up some pics, love to see yours! The cab/doors are all thats left of mine Thanks for the nice words guys! Heres a pic as it sits
There is one technical difference between round and square tube. Round has better torsional resistance so if your spring perch is offset to the front or rear of the crossmember round tube will be stiffer. Square tube will work just as well if not better if the spring is under the crossmember. Since most people use a fairly heavy wall material with their front crossmember it leaves it more to preference since it will be plenty strong either way. If you're trying to save weight and use thinner material i'd definitely use round on a suicide style perch.
I see by the piece of tape that your going to slice the bottom of your cab too. I'm trying to decide on how much channel. Not too much or my big budda belly won't fit! I still have the rest of my sheetmetal. Except the front fenders. They're on the front of Cleatus' coupe. Check out his post from the other day.
Good points for sure, I overlooked. I always questioned the twisting on the crossmember with some of the crazy tall spring perches I've seen, seems like the height would give it lots or leverage to twist the crossmember up
Hehe I'll check it out. I do still have to front fenders and the dodge grille too. Mine will end up channeled about 4". Much more than that with the chop and I'll have to section my neck to drive it
looking good ,dodgerodder, you ought to run it fenderless, but it will look cool either way! keep us posted. pops
Hello popsrods! I'm definitely running it fenderless, just mentioning that I have the parts leftover. I gotta get this done so I can start on that fordor!!
