My truck starts up fine but when i put it into gear it bogs down and dies. I adjusted the idle a bit faster and now when i put it into gear it bogs for a few seconds then catches up with itself and runs. Something is not right, what would cause this? Thanks in advance.
Could be a dozen things causing that. Is it a fresh rebuild? New carb? Need a little background..... Possibilities: Vacuum leak, idle mixture not right, float level not right, bad power valve, etc.
To be honest, my first thought was slow timing....just double check your intial timing before working on the carb.
Thanks everyone. Its a 350 and a new carb that is under a year old. My truck ran great before but I then it sat for a couple months, from that some nasty stuff built up in the primary side of the carb. I cleaned out the bowl and metering block, but I did not change the power valve. I have not put a vacuum gauge on it, although I don't think there is a leak cause there was not a problem before. I never messed with the mixture ratio and the timing was done about a month before I let the truck sit. I have checked to make sure the float level is correct. It will run fine until I put it into gear, then it'll bog down and die, unless the idle is set higher.
A leak is easy to find with some carb spray. And double checking timing isnt a bad idea. Also, sorta unrelated, but similar sounding... you mention that it sat for a while. I have seen recently alot of older cars that sit around have been having these random fuel-jellying problems cause of the newer ****ty fuel. A carb rebuild gets rid of it in the carb, but people will sometimes overlook the filters and (in one case we had at the speed shop) the foam in the fuel cell. We cleaned that car a couple times before realizing that the fuel cell foam was contaminated and kept gunking up the gas. USE STA-BIL if it's gonna sit.
Truck sat for awhile, carb dried out, no other changes, cleaned carb, now bogs? Accelerator pump and/or power valve.
Thanks fellas. I have a fuel cell with foam in it, which i will remove and inspect. Also, i will change the power valve.
