I'm thinking about putting a Holley 4160 (600 cfm) on my stock 66 Galaxie 390 engine. Can anyone out there that may have the same set up tell me if a special adapter plate is required? I'm hoping the Holley will just bolt right up to my stock manifold, but want to have the parts I need on standby just in case it doesn't. Also, is there a dramatic height difference between an Autolite 4100 and a Holley 4160? I'm just worried about my hood shutting. With the 4100 it's already a tight fit, so if the Holley is any taller I don't think I will be able to shut the hood. I know...the Autlo***e 4100 is the best, just rebuild that...BUT I've spent enough time and money trying to get that damn thing right and it's just not happening. So I figure I will just get rid of it and put a shiny new carb on it instead of continuing to beat my head on the wall and throw money at it.
Pony carbs in New Mexico...they have a website and can make your old 4100 much better than anything you could replace it with.
Should be a direct bolt on without any adapter needed. You may need to find the right parts to mate up the stock cable linkage to the carb. Any height difference is not enough to cause aircleaner issues that I remember. I had a OEM 428 Police Intercepter intake (C7AE-F) on a 66 Galaxie back in the mid 70s without any aircleaner issues. I ran an aftermarket chrome air cleaner. That intake manifold is at least an inch taller than the stock cast iron 4V intake. I still had a stock 4100 on it at that time. Later I put that same motor in my 53 F-100 and added a 600 cfm Holley. I could feel the difference with the Holley. Definately more power with the Holley and still got good fuel mileage as long as I kept my foot out of it.
I've looked into Pony before. BUT 9 out of 10 things read about them are negative. Plus I just spent a ton of money having this carb rebuilt and it still has problems. I'm not throwing anymore money at it. And for what Pony wants for a rebuild I can by the best Holley they make. I guess I should be more specific: my car is actually a 63, but the engine and carb are from a 66 Galaxie. So I don't think I will have to worry about the kickdown hooking up to the carb because I have the older mechanical style that operates off of a bellcrank on the rear of the manifold.
Actually, I wondered about your year of Galaxie because of your profile pic. I don't know for sure how the 63 carb linkage and kickdown hook up the the carb. I know I had to find the little ball end fitting to attach to the cable linkage used on the later models. A speed shop had that for me.
