My neighbor has a '66 Rambler 287 V8 that has been sitting for a year or so and she needs to sell it. I put a new battery in it, replaced the ballast resistor and checked to see if the starter is getting power, which it is. All the fluids are changed etc.... Anyway, I go to start and it just clicks. Cleaned all the grounds and reattached ( I dont know how I got roped into helping, but I'm a ****er for a helping friends out) and I am now stuck. Where do I go from here? She has people coming to look at it and it wont start. Haha. Any help would be a great help. Thanks:)

Smack the starter a couple times with a hammer while someone turns the key. Does the engine spin over by hand? Where in so cal are you?

Solenoid clicking usually indicates a weak battery, bad connections (check on the block and starter), bad cables, or a bad starter. Try jump starting -- if the battery is weak it should start or at least turn over fast enough to start. Could be something else that prevents it from starting (no or weak spark, fuel, etc.).

Cryoman it was not the cables. As much as I wanted it to be its not. Brand new battery, thats not weak at all. So I'm thinking it is the starter. Luckily she has another one that came with the car when she bought it. I need to bench test it before I go throught the h***le of taking the other one out. It does not look like fun. The whole bottom of the car is coated in dripping ****** fluid case her ex blew the torque converter. Ughhh. If any one is interested in the car let me know and I can send her your number. I am in Long Beach, CA. It has a great running 287 V8 and the body is really straight.

That top starter bolt is a ***** to get to, but it can be done without removing the exhaust manifold. Just warning ya!

You might want to post a pic of the car, or at least mention the body style and model name and number. I know it's a Cl***ic because the Amb***ador only used the 327, and no American V-8 until late in the year, and then it used the then brand new 290.

I posted some pictures in the Cl***ified section. Not great but you can make it out. I know nothing about Ramblers at all. I am just trying to help out my neighbor.

    UPDATE:
So after going through and doing all the usual stuff, I turned to taking the starter solenoid appart. Since removing the starter from the car looked like a pain. Removed the wires, started loosening the two nuts that hold the cover on and...... Yes! and Ahhh! no. Corroded pieces of metal falling out everywhere. Apparently the car was in a flood and the starter had been submerged. So I took it off, cleaned, soldered, tweaked and YES! Funny how small details like the car being underwatercould have helped. Haha. Now I have to tackle why the trans is puking out trans fluid. ****! Haha. I'll post some pics of the solenoid, its almost funny. Almost.
