Going side steer on my '29 bitsa' and it would probably be easier to cross steer it... but i WANT side steer, for better or worse.

the problem is i wanted cowl steer but there is just no room! Perhaps my feet are too big... To give room to use the pedals i have to have the box up too high, the problem being compounded by the seating position being one of sitting on the floor with legs outstretched rather than traditional sitting, if that was the case i could have the pedals further back than the firewall. Using a narrow chev cowl doesn't help either!

so i have settled for ch***is mounted side steer.

for those that wonder, i have chosen a Toyota Hilux 4x4 box that side steers the right way. Just need to reverse the pitman arm, or rather find one that bends out and not in and that will fit the tapered spline.

That is just what I did with my Morris, ch***is mounted the 'box.

The Pitman arm bent the wrong way, but me and Mr Gas Torch soon talked it into rearranging itself.

if you want to use cowl steer, why can't you sink the floor in the pedal area, so you wouldn't have to mount the steering box as high? this will give the feeling of more "normal" seating position and legroom as well... how much are you off by?

sadly, we are not allowed to use Mr Gas Torch here...

too much ch***is Xmember to deal with to sink the floor. I will go back and look at that idea though. Its my first rod so maybe i learn something from this one! Not building a car like everyone else has its ergonomic challenges! Not as simply as get an A ch***is, get an A body etc...

Wonder if you could do something like this:

I have the clutch and brake shafts running concentric but you could do similar without getting as fancy. Getting your engineer to sign off on something like this might be interesting.

It's that sort of thinking that keeps me tuning in. I like the brake clutch cross shafts.

@ Buffalo bill...perhaps i should explain... we can use a torch, but it has to be by somebody qualified like a blacksmith etc and must be properly heat treated etc and certified and all that stuff. What i meant was we cant just light it up in the shed and rework it!

that sure is a neat side sterr set up!

my problen is erganomics of low seating posi and no room for feet and box unless the box is up high, problem compiunded by running a sotk undropped axle thus making the steering arm was to low for the cowl exit up high.

    cheers
