I searched high and low here, maybe I'm just not good at searching What I'm looking for is instructions on how to reverse a Vega box for side steer duty on my 26 RPU. I have seen a thread on here with pictures and all just can't find it anymore. Can anyone help ?
I know it's not what you asked for...I've never seen anyone reverse one. Here's a pic of the only car I've ever seen using a vega box for side steer. It doesn't really help you but here you go any way. It's not reversed as you can see the pitman points up. Here are a couple threads dealing with this question.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=508164 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140365 Good luck.
The reversing process is the same as any other recirculating ball box: dis***emble, turn the worm gear 180 degrees on the input shaft, plug original input shaft hole with a cup plug, machine the input shaft pre-load adjuster nut for the input shaft and seal. The last part can be done in a drill press, but best done in a lathe so you can get it centered and cut a nice step to bottom out the input shaft seal. The original input seal will be too big on the OD to work. You'll need to pick out a seal with a smaller OD. There is a large slection of .625 ID seals with either .875 or 1.00 OD that you could use.
I'd also look at reversing a 525 box. Same mounting footprint as the Vega, just a bit bigger, super strong.
I'll look at HRD. I found this one pic of a reversed Vega box, no instructions on doing it. Sounds easy enough though.
I reversed a Vega box for my 37 Fiat. It reverses just like a Corvair box. Drill out the adjuster nut, plug the other end with a freeze plug and turn everything around.
