Nothin' TOO Involved... Buildin' a 40 G***ER ........ Needs some Taillight inspiration ... ...... thanks boys, jersey Skip
I like the stock '40 Ford Chevrons but I also like the simplicity and elegance of the '39 teardrops. I know a lot of folks feel like they're over done, but they are a cl***ic design. Just please don't put billet slits down on the pan below the decklid. I know you have better taste than that.....Don.
...That might be the only other tailights that would look good. I had forgotten just how well they flow on a '40 rear fender. Might be getting a little hard to find by now unlike the '39 and '40 Ford units. Point well made, Dreddybear. I do think they would look more appropriate on a tail-dragger style custom with skirts as opposed to a g***er. Just me. edit.....I see skidmarks beat me to the punch with the custom comment.....Please, no Mustang tailights.
In building a hot rod, I think it's wise to avoid changing something just for the sake of changing it to something other than stock. I want to improve on the original vehicle but keep some of the best features of a stock vehicle--'40 Ford taillights are a case in point. One of the most attractive taillights of all time, and suited to the overall shape of the car. Line the inside of the buckets with aluminum foil and put in halogen bulbs to make them brighter. Of course, if the car is a Standard model that only had one taillight, put a second taillight on it--Standards and Deluxes used the same taillights, one on a Standard (except cars sold in states that had begun requiring two taillights by 1940), two taillights on a Deluxe.
I've got the perfect solution! Run the stock '40 taillights. On a custom, maybe but it would be tough to do better. On a race car, there are better things to spend your time on.
AGREE!! 40 Ford customs can look good with '41 Stude tails, but if it is a g***er, or you want the g***er look, chevrons or 39's are best.
Back in the 1950s there was a coupe here with 59 caddy taillites mounted low in the sides of the rear fenders and 59 Corvette lights mounted in the corvette position look good.
Back in the 50's? That would have been '59 right? A g***er is a race car, so if that's what you are building it's either stock or nothing. In your case, that means stock.
The boys seem to have spoken ....... 39 or 40's seem to be the winner .... probably the 40's ........... ........jersey Skip
