I'm working on my A I found hiding under a tarp for 30+ years. The motor in poor shape the block has 3 cracks in it and the head has had water leaks for years when it was running. The leaks had eating the head away at the water ports so there little room from the ports to the out side. I have a different used block 1 crack and a used head. The head dose not have one of the water ports drilled though , its between cyl 2 & 3 the oval port near center in picture. There's no marking on the head. The question is do I have the port drilled ? Who made the head? Don't know much about A's yet, but its been a fun trip so far. Thank you James
One thing to know now is to keep your bad block. The engine number is your VIN & the best place to copy it for proof if needed. If you toss it out & somebody uses it to apply for a "lost" ***le & later on you go to license it & the VIN is already in use.... Protect your serial numbers
The elongated hole is described in the October 1929 Service Bulletin. The change was made to improve water circulation. They talk about the change and using the correct gaskets with the new heads that have the hole and point out that the new gaskets can also be used with the old heads (as was done in your case). They are silent about drilling out the head. There should be a lot of cars running around without this hole. The head looks like a stock Model A head which is cheap since many people are using the reproduction high compression heads. Charlie Stephens
