Correct, but their tiny brains cannot do the math that a few parts sold off a rusted hulk could far exceed the s**** value of said rusted hulk.

Labor to pull parts, people whining about the price, liability of people wandering around in yard. Easy math. Can't save them all, makes you think more about the ones you should be saving doesn't it.

That's actually 1/2" steel cable. The best way to haul s****! They have to use that because straps get cut and chains come loose. They are supposed to wrap loads with a netting to keep small stuff on. Back on topic- I bet the rear gate on the wagon is worth a bunch to the right person! To bad about the caps, nobody would ever missed them for sure!

The time & effort required dosen't add up. A lot of these guys with a crusher shredder/ bailer outfit are mobile and go to the yards they are there to do a specific task for that yard in a set amount of time. They crush/shred it and put it on a truck and it's straight to the steel mill or on to a ship to China to make your kid a bicycle. They're there for a day or two and the yard or part of it gets cleared out. This has always been the way s**** business has run. Buy wrecked cars, park them some where, sell parts off of them, once it's been picked clean send it to the steel mill. It has always been this way simply because realestate is not limit less and a normal yard has to stay current to stay in business, there going to sell way more parts off 5 year old Cobalts and F150s than 63 Tempests or 59 ramblers. Sad but true. Only the best run antique/ cl***ic recycling yards can survive and a modern efficient and environmentaly clean opperation will drive the price of parts up some but it would save a whole lot more. A lot of the old yards are gettin' the squeeze from local governments over environmental concerns, the old hulks are leaking oil and other fluids into the soil and ground water bla bla bla. Duh the cars have been there for 30 years the leakings been done you drank that water 30 years ago. But salvage yards are easy targets and make it look like the politicians are doing something.

Well said Greezeball. If you see a part in a yard you want buy it. Don't whine about the price, just buy it. I've baled several old cars out of spite. Piss me off and I can guarantee your part won't be available when you come back with another lowball offer. I know several other yards that operate the same way. One operator gets a lowball offer, and raises his price for the next time. They don't make them anymore, and the less popular makes aren't going to be reproduced in China. I hate to rant, but we are rapidly losing our treasures, and a lot of it is our own fault.

Ignorant "math" is typically espoused by keyboard heros who haven't "saved" anything in the past several years.

As a dinner guest in his home, I asked a yard owner what he "had" to take in a year to just cover the overhead. The yard was started by his dad in the early 60's in rural MB Canada. He said he needed $17-19k to cover the licensing, insurance, utilities, taxes, etc.. to even open the gate. (his dad paid off the land, buildings and heavy equipment decades ago)

His wife was very quick to point out - That is if he never paid himself a dime.

So if he managed to pay himself $15/hr, he needs $50k. Thats if nothing ever breaks and no employees. (while I was there his CASE 6 series loader was down for repair)

He doesn't run a yard anymore, its closed to the public.

But everyone is en***led to sit behind their keyboard and *****.

Just in case anyone here wondered, I know for a fact lowridersartgallery stepped/fetched/hauled over 30 cl***ic cars a****st the hundreds hauled in 2010 and s****ed most all of them because of lack of interest.

I would have followed him to the yard, talk to his boss, plead to let me buy his crew lunch to let me get some parts if I couldn't have the car! At least something could be saved!
