Back in the 40's, guys used to use plain ol' daily newspapers wadded up & stuffed inside all the door panels & deck lids, quarter panels etc. for sound deadning, especially in the roadsters. When building my '32 roadster in 1962, it was a flashback in time as I carefully extracted these tightly compressed pages of the L.A. Times & opened them up to read the old time dates from 1940 to 1947! Made sure ALL the paper was removed before visiting the body man. How about you guys?----Find simalar stuff in your panels? Later, found out that a good item for sound deadning was a water mixed black substance from 3M that was easily applied with an old paint brush, & used under all my body, fenders, running boards, gas tank, front splash pan with tremendous results now still there since 1962. This works great under the fenders to resist gravel & "Starbursts" from stones too.----------Don
yes sir.... my RPU was a dragcar inthe 60s and when i got it i noticed newspapers in the door so i carefully took a bit off the roll and found that it was dated 1962 LA times so there it will stay! thats cool that you have the same! chuck
I found 1950's Phoenix AZ newspapers in the trunk lid of my '32 3 window and a 1957 church bulletin in the pocket of my original '32 5 window.
My '30 roadster had 1938 Pasadena newspapers in the doors, took forever to get them cleaned out. They were as dry as a popcorn fart.
friend of mine bought a deuce roadster that the Ayala bros. in Cal. used to own; he got several garbage bags worth of 50"s newspapers out of the nooks and crannies.
Pieces that I scanned from my 32 Roadster. The doors and the rumble lid are packed solid with the LA Times and the LA Mirror...Jan and February 1951. I left it all but these pieces to document it as being an early So Cal hotrod. It's packed so tightly that you can only peel small pieces off. The classified section had 2 1949 Mercury convertible ads for 1500 each. They were dealer ads. I almost had a heart attack when I found the "insulation" in the pass door and immediately pulled the rest of the panels. Mine
My 1940 Pontiac had an entire June 7 1944 NY newspaper rolled up under the front seat. Headline is the D-Day invasion. Still got it...
Not as bad as you might think. The pieces wouldn't lay flat for a picture so I put them in the scanner to get a good copy. The doors had been painted a few times over the years. So it was not exposed to to light. I took a friend with me to look at it when I was buying it. He pulled me aside and said the doors are fiberglass!! Listen to the way that they shut. I triple checked and they were indeed steel. The interior door panel was card board with loop pile carpeting glued on. The newspaper does make a difference.
My roadster had LA Times in the doors ... 1946 dates. And a few coins ... all before 1940. ( photo taken at Limework's Open House { Aussie's Steve's place }... 2010 ) Wishing something REAL ... BAD on the guy who stole AussieSteves 32 California license tags
