You're not too rambly for me and I'm all that counts. You are no doubt going to ask a dumb question and we are going to beat you up for it. But in the midst of all the drama someone will give you the right answer and you'll end up with real thick skin if you stay long enough. Stand your ground and you'll end up doing things you never believed was possible.
there's many other ways to go.. Mustang 2 is okay, but those short little control arms aren't the greatest for handling, camaro clip has longer arms.. makes it better, there's also a volare front clip, that's easier but kind of a goofy set up. jag IFS is a great option.. half the time you can almost bolt em in.. they have great geometry and gets the front end in the weeds.. and ya don't have to chop up the frame.. but then again, as I always ask with these setups, why do ya want IFS? a lot of times what you want can be accomplished with simple bolt on upgrades...
Ok, I will avoid using sentences that start with "I've been told". I guess you guys "told" me. Just please don't hurt me.
I have helped out (been the flunky, hold the drop-light, go get the What-A-Burger guy), on one of those and it looked scary. I had to close my eyes a couple of times (should have kept them open). I also know some people who said they wished they had not done it and had trouble keeping the front end aligned, uneven tire wear, etc. I guess it just seems drastic to me given the other options out there. (Like using hydros instead of bags). In the end I guess its all in what you want. Cool Shoe-Box by the way!-Jim <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
Fore what it's worth I have done several Camaro, Chevelle, Nova, clips under the '50-'57 Chevy P/U and a few Mustang II. I do not recommend the MII nor would I build myself one. Nothing rides better than an above mentioned clipped out Chevy P/U including a stock axle. Add some disc brakes if you want and a 1"-1 1/8" sway bar and your done. I have a long list of references . You who say MustangII probably have never done a GM clip to compare ride...................................
camaro clip is the way to go if you have to have clip, i have done several, they will flat out outhandle any mustang 2 any day of the week and twice on sundays, and i would never put a clip for a 2000 lb ford under a 3500 lb chevy......mustang 2s have their place, but never under a chevy pickup........why not just do up the stock front end?
Progresive Automotive Baltimore,Ohio build anything you could want for your ride! I am with Doc on this...use the rails Give them a call great people, ask for Bobby.
OK, I won't hurt you You did say "never" in your first post and I took offense to it. Back in the 80's/90's my shop specialized in suspension swaps, we did dozens of Camaro/ Nova clips and never had a problem. I agree you got to know what your doing, we repaired/ replaced a lot of clips done elswhere that were installed bad, some dangerous. I had (still gathering dust in my shop) a special frame table just for these clips, made sure everything was staight, the alignment was good and the ride hight was set right. Not the best pic but you can see the table / jig. I'd say the ones we did were 100% right.
Yes, that was a strong statement for me to make given my limited knowledge of the matter. I can only tell you that "I" have never seen one that was 100% right (that I know of) and have in fact been "told" horror stories about them. It was only my intention to watch out for this guy, not to speak poorly of others builds. If I offended anyone then you have my apology and a beer from me if we meet at the Round-up....wait, how may people responded to this thread?
Thanks, I'd read up some about this adjustment to the wheel base to better fit the fender opening. I did pickup the 79 camaro subframe and rearend over the weekend but now i'm debating if i'd rather use the straight axle and upgrade with a 5 lug disk brake kit and booster with drop spindles. just doing some price comparison on the kit vs. rebuilding the camaro subframe. might be sounding like a winy bitc_ but I'm just getting my feet wet. my wife thinks i'm nuts to be in love with that old 56 but she's also said to do what makes me happy. somewhere down the road it'll cost me somehow.
Hug it out. All better. Don't you love a happy ending? Well I do. Especially down at the wash and rub.
If you go the disc brake route also a waste in my opinion unless your building a canyon carver drims up to par work just fine, you can use the stuff off the camero. Don't kneed a kit just do a search. I think you will be real happy with the beam but I grew up with them. Whatever you do keep us posted.
